How would you go about painting charred models or basing? I was thinking of painting torchstar (crisis suit with two flamers) with a charged circle about his legs with a bunch of dead/burned rippers and body parts.

The best idea i had was just a drybrush of black. The only other idea i had was to mix black with the new cracked earth and paint that over the minis/ground.

I would try the drybrush black and see how it comes out.
If there is a black weathering powder, that might be worth a go, and could also be used on exhaust pipes and rocket nozzles.
