This really is pointed towards ork/nid players with large model count.
How do you guys get your models from home to the game table? I have recently expanded my nid collection beyond its current caseing and well i would love foam, its expensive to buy for so many models. So any advice? Pictures would be great!

Long shallow plastic tubs work well. Lids optional.
Also large trays with high sides.
I prefer not to foam and case my hordes unless i'm going a really long way, as it takes so fething long to unpack and repack them.
A friend uses a multilevel tray box intended originally for scapbooking as a paper holder. Scapbookers have all sorts of awesome tray/box options

Girlfriend transports her boys in a multilevel tackle box and her larger vehicles in a popup canvas box. The trays keep them from shaking too much and larger infantry can be stored in the bottom. She's storing 50-60 boys, 20 lootaz, 8 burnas, 2 big Meks, 10 grots, 5 meganobz and a ghaz in it currently, with room to spare. Can place in loose foam if concerned.

I know what your talking about bud. Honestly, I got these a bit cheaper than retail since I get my major purchases done around Christmas at my FLGS, and my owner is more than happy to toss a discount my way on occasion.
Got 2 of these. 1 holds all my TMCs and mediums, and 1 holds all my infantry models.

I'm sitting on somewhere between 2500-3500 points new dex, since I haven't tallied up the new prices.
If your looking at other options, try battlefoam. Honestly, I don't find price to be much of an issue, since I carry several hundred dollars worth of stuff in each box and I don't want them broken. Just do what I do and toss a 20 in a jar every paycheck.

This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. Hope this link works:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Plano-Gun-Guard-SE-Series-4-Pistol-Accessory-Case-Black/20893850
It's a pistol case. About $17 from Walmart.
The outside dimension is the same size as the GW 108 figure transport case. It's sturdy and strong. On the inside there are 3 levels of soft foam, intended to store pistols in between.
I shaved the top and bottom foam pieces to fit the intended model. The center section is cut through. I use this pistol case to transport bulky items. I have one case that easily transports 2 landraiders and all of their accessories with room to spare. I think this case would be perfect for transporting MCs.

I agree with others about using tubs.
I play DE, which granted is NOT a horde army. However what I've found is that foam tends to cause more problems, especially with finecast models, than simply putting them in an essentially open container and not throwing them around.
It's just so easy for all the tiny bits to catch on foam and pull off. Every single time I went to the store I had to take a bottle of superglue with me to fix a few models as I pulled them out.
By forgoing that and leaving them in a tray I haven't seen that problem.

I don't play Orks or 'Nids, but I have two different IG armies. One has been kept in a 15x11x9 plastic box for the past several years with my infantry stuffed inside a couple smaller cardboard boxes within the larger container and my vehicles sitting on to of them. This...is not the best approach.
My current project has some 72 infantry models, 3 weapon teams, 2 Russes, 2 Sentinels, a Basilisk, a Chimera, and a Vendetta. Thus far I've been using this Plano tackle box:
http://www.planomolding.com/product.php?BCCID=111&PID=645
I can typically cram my infantry into 3 of the plastic trays and leave the 4th one out, making room for my codex, dice, templates, and measuring tape to sit on top of the other 3 internal containers. The top-area storage is actually quite spacious (I'm pretty sure there's room for another Chimera and a Hellhound) and fits all the vehicles except for the Vendetta (which looks likes it'd fit if I took out most of the other vehicles). The Vendetta's flying stand, however, does fit in there with all the tanks. One model out of 82 not fitting isn't too bad.
My brother, who plays Tyranids and Chaos, also uses the same type of box with a similar deal. CSM/Gants go in the trays, and his monsters and vehicles go in the top area (though Helldrakes don't fit and Defiliers are awkward to try and fit in there--it works for all the 'nids, though).

I have 200+ Hormagaunts, 200+ Termagants and near 3 dozen MCs...and yes, I generally like to bring it all with me because I'll often let my opponent choose the type of list they want to face.
Any ideas for such a force?
Right now I am using a mixture of cardboard boxes and totes.
Two notes:
I am okay with scooping up termagants like M&Ms out of a bowl
I am looking to go on the cheap side.
That Canvas box looked intriguing, but having dividers is also crucial to me.

I have a large toolbox I got for around $10.00 on sale at Walmart a few years ago. I simply dump my small Tyranid models in there and scoop them out* like "ductvader" does I think.
I have a divider for the larger models. I have noticed it's still a bit more time consuming to pull them out or put away than I'd like. However it is very easy to transport!
NOTE ON FOAM and Tyranids: Similar to what clively posted I've noticed my Hormagaunts, Gargoyles, Genestealers and others with sharp points get caught in foam very easily. At least the less dense material. I'm not sure about Battlefoam foam.
*All of my Tyranids are sealed with my "dip" of the old "Future Floor Wax" + Windsor & Newton Inks mix. So they can take a beating and still don't chip. Even the metals.

haha atm i use a hive tyrant box for termagants and another for hormagaunts, and just scoop out the ones needed. All of this is transported in a larger tote atm. the MCs like tervigons and trygons are throwing a wrench in my packing and i can not neatly stack in my tote using GW boxes anymore :-p

Stack-able plastic trays, with a metal plate in the bottom glued in, and a magnet glued in the bottom of each unit, costs about 7 dollars for a set of 2 stack-able trays, $0.67 for a 8"x8" plate from home improvement store, and around $12 for 100 magnets from amazon, works well enough for my metal sisters where I can flip the tray upside down(slowly) and no models move at all. Even with couple hundred units you are looking at a considerably cheap alternative to safely transport models with little to no movement at all, even worked for my Pentinent engines with a few more magnets in the base(aka lot heavier metal model)

If you don't throw the tubs around they protect very well. I use these, they are dirt cheap and very strong.
