Would anyone here mind if I used Space Wolf models and Marine models interchangeably, and played both armies? (With the same color scheme.) I realize I won't be playing any of you, most likely, but I want to get a feel for the general opinion.
I'm considering getting the Space Marine codex and a few appropriate models as Allies for my Space Wolves, but I don't want to get any new stock troops models, or use different color schemes, since my Wolves have homebrew fluff/color scheme going on and fluff-wise the Space Marine allies would just be a specialist detachment of the Wolves. But, depending on the list I'm running, I might want to just take 60 Grey Hunters, and use some of the models which were once considered to be Marines and plain Wolves, and visa-versa.
In game, I would be sure to clearly mark who is who, of course, but would anyone be bothered by this?

(In case you were curious: I'd mostly be allying to Marines in order to get Hunters, Stalkers, Stormravens, etc., so my actual Marine troops would be minimal. Though, attaching a Chapter Master on a bike to my Thunderwolves might be a fun deathstar...
Depending on the list and points value, I might even take pure Marines with minimal troops in order to get the three Heavy Support slots, and then take Wolves as normal since it's rare that I take more than 1 Heavy Support, Elite, or Fast Attack anyways, and I probably wouldn't need to go over 2 HQ or 2 Troops.)

As long as you have a way of distinguishing which ones are generic marines there shouldn't be a problem.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

yeah, this is done a lot, so long as you have a visual way to tell what is from what codex, you are good to go.

suggestions: simple way is to add a dot of color to the side of the base

Or rather, as long as your opponent (me) can easily distinguish SW from Codex Marines there should be no problem. SW aren't that different from other marines that I'd be sweating to find out which are which but it will be important once you're in charge range - SW usually have more attacks so I don't want them biting my butt.

Also as a side note; Unfortunately, unless you somehow find a way for a vanilla Chapter Master to gain access to a Thunderwolf mount, he cant join a TWL or TWC unit.
Quote from the SW codex under the Thunderwolf Mount entry on page 62; "However, he may only join Thunderwolf Cavalry or Fenrisian Wolves units - anything else is asking for trouble!"

You have that back to front.
The TWL has a restriction. TWC don't have any issue with ICs joining them other than different movement speeds.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

Yeah just had a look, whoops. So the next question for me would be, could said Chapter Master join a combined unit of TWC and a TWL?

Why would he not be able to join them?
There could be a question about the other way round as some people say a unit of TWC + IC isn't a unit of TWC. However if the Chapter master joins after the TWL then I cannot see any problems as the TWL isn't joining a unit.

Marines are marines, you can use whatever rules you like. And there is really no reason to differentiate them, though you may if you want to. Just make it clear before the game which model is what.

There is a very clear reason to differentiate them, an opponent can't be expected to know that the 10 man squad on the left is space wolves while the one on the right is iron fists.

I'd not expect that they have a different colour scheme all over the model but something to differentiate them. A strip of colour on the base or whatever would be nice or use different colours on their shoulder pad etc.

I would suggest saving your money for now (unless you need to have the new SM codex and use allys like now) we are rumored to be getting our own 6th ed this year.

If flyers are an issue drop a RP or two into your list and make use of the good abilities we have for now.
