Im curious about it but not willing to drop money for something that is garbage. Has anyone bought this? if so whats your opinion?

It's not even out yet....this weekend I think? So called it this time tomorrow.

It will have Cassius as a requirement and 1-3 sternguard squads with preferred enemy tyranids that work outside the FoC. Don't hold your breath for anything interesting.

I think it's just pre-order at this point. Releases Saturday if I'm not mistaken.

I did see the orginization which consists of cassius, 1 squad of tyrannic vets, and 0-6 stormtalons

I bought it today so I can download it on my tablet and/or phone in work tomorrow on the sly. I'll let you know how good it is.

I just gave a quick read through of the rules before getting ready for work, so this is just a basic opinion based purely on the rules.

Don't bother getting it. They basically downgraded Sternguard. No special ammunition beyond hellfire rounds, no combi-weapons, no heavy or special, no upgrades for the Sgt. I already have a more effective Tyrannic War Veteran squad just by attaching Cassius to my Sternguard.
And that one datasheet we saw? The only one there is.
I love the Ultramarines, and I quite like GW's digital editions, but I'm beyond disappointment right now.

Yeah, I can't see them being worth it. They're 2 points less than a honour guard, and are hellfire only Sternguard with preferred enemy tyranids and zealot if fighting nids.

So you pay one more point than sternguard, but lose quite a bit. Your sarg can't take any upgrades other than melta bombs either.

Formation gives you synergy with infiltrating talons that lets you ignore cover... that could be good against bikes and such... there's some potential with the formation if you know that you'll be fighting xenos.

The fluff is okay, and being able to take a LR of any type as a dedicated transport will be nice. Still not worth the money though.

Thanks for the review. I had high hopes for this. If the price point was a little lower, I would have impulse bought it sight-unseen. But with GW pricing things as they do, I am grateful for the recon and intel. /salute

I really wanted the HB in the sternguard box to find a home here. Oh well. My TWVs have been fighting as sternguard with distinction for the last two codexes, and will continue to do so.

It's seriously awful.

Good for nids, but really nothing else.

It gives you 6 Storm Talons outside the FOC if that's your thing.

The unit is unremarkable power-wise but decent for fluff games.

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but I wanted to chime in on this.

I ordered the models (Cassius, War Vets, Sternguard box and a stormtalon) and the dataslate.

Short version: It's a fluffy data slate. I like the background and the ability to take any land raider as a dedicated transport.

The downside: Like others have said, its a little underwhelming power-wise. Unless you're fighting Nids, and then it's actually not bad at all. The 'Avenge the Fallen 1st' rule gives everyone zealot if you're playing nids, so you'd be fearless and hatred plus preferred enemy against nids.

I don't see why they would leave out the option to take heavy flamers or heavy bolters (without the special ammo), and I'll probably house-rule that with my gaming group.

So, once again, fluffy means 'borderline under-powered'. Oh well.

My verdict: If it weren't $8, say $5, I'd say buy it hands down, but for $8, only get it if you're a hardcore UM fan or if you play against Nids on a regular basis.

As it stands, I'll probably be modeling a couple of squads of these guys as my veteran attachments for my battle company. Tyrannic War Terminators anyone?? :-)
