I think RAW is indisputable, but here's the scenario:
Its night fighting. Squad of Hormagaunts is 18" away from a squad of marines. But the back ranks of the gaunts is over 24" away.
Models over 24" gain shrouded.
If one model has shrouded the whole unit gets it.
Just wondering if anyone plays this differently than RaW would indicate, as in this case it seems a little convoluted.

None of the models that are actually taking wounds have shrouded, so HIWPI is that they don't benefit from shrouded unless the model itself actually has it.
That being said, if one of the firing models from the unit shooting you is more than 24" away from your unit's closest model, he's giving ALL your models shrouded and that means that you get the benefit from the entire enemy unit [on grounds of "if any of the firing models grant a cover save, the model is in cover".

The rules for night fight don't say MODELS over 24" have shrouded, its says UNITS over 24" get shrouded.
The entire unit has to be over 24" to get shrouded at all. Part of the unit being over 24" isn't enough to give any of the models in the unit shrouded.
That's what the rules actually are Automatically Appended Next Post: Spellbound wrote:That being said, if one of the firing models from the unit shooting you is more than 24" away from your unit's closest model, he's giving ALL your models shrouded and that means that you get the benefit from the entire enemy unit [on grounds of "if any of the firing models grant a cover save, the model is in cover".
This is wrong. You are measuring from the unit, not from individual models.

Ah, I stand corrected then.
Isn't usually an issue, things are either bolter range or heavy weapon range. But good to know.

Basically what CrownAxe said. You measure the distance between the units, and it's that distance which determines whether you get shrouded, stealth or nothing at all, rather than how far away individual models are.
