When you buy a quad gun for a bastion, do you have to place it on top, or can you place it outside the bastion? The image in the rule book shows the comm-link outside the bastion, which is confusing.

If you place it outside, is there a specific distance away it has to be? Does it stop being an emplaced weapon on a fortification and start being a gun emplacement (and thus battlefield debris)? If it does start being a gun emplacement does this mean that it can be targeted separately and used to fire overwatch...?

And finally, does stronghold assault change all this anyway?

Phew - so many questions...

The rulebook isn't very clear where you can put the Emplaced weapon, however Stronghold Assault does answer all of your questions.

Books at home but IIRC Strongpoint assault actually specifies that the emplaced weapon does not need to be placed on the bastion roof and can be placed anywhere else in your deployment zone.

It's anywhere in your deployment zone, there is no 6" requirement. The rule book never said the upgrades must be placed on the roof either (it actually shows the comms relay next to it).
What stronghold assault updated was that if you do place it on the roof it will automatically fire at bs 2 for you until your opponent can "claim" the bastion from you (even if you don't occupy it as well as all the heavy bolters)

If can be placed anywhere within 6 inches of the bastion, or on the roof. if it is on the ground it cannot automatically fire and can be targeted and destroyed. If it is on the roof, it automatically fires at BS2, (unless bastion is upgraded with machine spirit, BS3) or can be fired manually. if it is on the roof, it may not be targeted and is considered to be the same as the heavy bolters in the windows. and can only be destroyed via penetrating hit on the bastion itself.

Gun emplacements can be purchased as upgrades for many fortifications, and can be placed on top of a building's battlements or as freestanding weapons on the battlefield. A gun emplacement placed upon a building' battlements counts as an additional emplaced weapon. A gun emplacement placed elsewhere on the tabletop uses the normal rules for gun emplacements

on page 18 under the "Battlements and Battlefield" -- B & B -- section of the fortification upgrade it says

.. purchase a single B & B upgrade from the list below.
These are placed either on the fortifications battlements ( if it is a building with battlements) or anywhere on the tabletop that is wholly within 6" of their fortification.

According to the rule book, fortifications are placed anywhere in your tablle half. I can't find anything about 6", even in stronghold assault...

Page 16(Stronghold assault), Red quoted the rule.

You can apparently Place the Bastion right at the Center line and place the Quadgun(or other B&BD) within 6" into your opponents half.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

Also, it is not an emplaced weapon unless it is on the battlements. Emplaced weapons have an auto-fire option. Ground based weapons do not.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.
