Hiho,

i was going over the tyranid releases the other day and recognised that the swarm box seems to offer a real discount.

Tyranid Swarm BOX - $170.00
(10 Gargoyles; 40 Hormagaunts; 40 Termagants; 1 Carnifex; and 4 Ripper Swarms)

If i buy those separately they'd cost $258.75.

Thats a whooping $88.75 saved. Or ~34% Less. And i didnt even count in the ripper swarms in that equation. It doesnt even seem like its a limited box but is there to stay.

Did gw hear the bang and realised that its way too expensive to start an army (and especially a horde army like tyranids)? Or is it just a coincidence that their revenue dropped by 24% in the last year and almost at the same time we see such an offer?

Their Box deals are kind of chaotic. Some of them, like the Swarm, saves you alot of money. Others, like the Tau Rapid Insertion Force, save you almost nothing (I think there's one up there where the box set is like $2 more than buying it all seperate).

Almost like they're just packaging stuff up and slapping prices on them but no on has a calculator.

Now if they just included an HQ or something and threw in the Codex for free, it'd be a good "Want to start a new Tyranid army? Start here!" kind of deal, and that's the kind of boxes that 40k needs.

Old One Eye is an HQ and can be built from the Carnifex.

The “one click bundles” save you no money, they are just marketing tools. The actual boxes, like the battleforces and strikeforce, do save you a bit of coin. Assuming you use most of the contents.

I know the space marine strikeforce they released is a significant savings. Of course, it does have a hefty pricetag, but the value for product is there.

What this man said is correct. However, even though you save money with the battleforce boxes, you usually have 1 or 2 units that you'll rarely use included. So, factoring that in, you aren't really saving a lot.

I'm eyeballing that box as a way to have some fun with a scenereo campaign where players have to eal with bugs as well as each other (games overseen by a gamemaster like in the old days where the bugs are played by the game master. Then using those as a stepping stone to starting a bug army for myself a little at a time.

Also, if you play Death Watch or some other 40K RPG, this could be a cool way to do it. Pricey, and will require a lot of painting, but still cool.

True. What you should do when looking at a GW bundle is to price out what it would cost to buy everything separately. Figure out how much of that you actually want, and total it up. Compare to the bundle price, and evaluate your “bargain” As an example, here is my thought process for when I picked up the SM strikeforce:

Want:
Drop pod (I only own 2. Three is a magic number for drop pod assaults)
Razorback (The only way I can field one is to use the chassis from my pred and the TLHB from my LR)
Ven. Dread (I love the kit, inspired by what I've seen here on Dakka to make my own)
Tac squad (New, mostly for bits and bodies)
Assault Marines (need another 5 for the apoc. battle company formation)

So that adds up to around $200 worth of stuff. So for $25 more I get:

Sniper scouts (I own 10, 5 more is a little overkill, but might see use)
Captain (I was looking to get more for the apoc. HQ thing anyway)
Command Squad (might pick up some bikes for these guys, or build them as sternguard)
The second tac squad (I only wanted one, guess more can't hurt.)

While I didn’t need everything, I wanted enough, and had enough ideas for the rest to make it worthwhile and pick it up. Different people are going to have different needs. The strikeforce is also a much better deal then most of the old battleforces. Which often contain stuff you don’t need, and the percentage of savings is lower.

With the swarm box, and a ~$90 savings, you can not like a chunk of it and still be ahead of the game. Another thing to consider is that the actual boxes, unlike the one-clicks, can be found at your FLGS. And subject to any discount or deal you can get from them.

GW doesn’t offer a lot of discounts, but there are some. This is one of them. But make sure it works for you.

If you count the Ripper Swarms, the full value of models comes out to approximately $315 USD, so close to a ~46% discount, which is an amazing value for GW. That being said, several of those kits (particularly the Rippers) are overpriced anyway.

EDITED on account of bad math.

The space marine Strike Force, and the Tyranid Swarm are replacing the battle forces.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

Some of the boxes are SICK deals. Rare thing from gw nowadays.
It's like the Eldar Ghost Warriors pack is the best deal from games workshop right now.
Cost (in canadian) $325 for $430 dollars worth of models. I know of 1 discounter who put this pack together (because they are supposed to be gw exclusive) for $245 so that's a huge savings. Grab a spirit seer for $15 and the codex $40 (all from the discounter) and for $300 you get about 1200 point Eldar army.
Not the most competitive but best deal ever.

Also how many points are in the swarm box? Give or take?

Yeah the big boxes are great value for money. The Space Marine one is £140 but separately costs £196.50. You essentially get two of the squads/vehicles in the box for free.

About 700 points iirc for the Swarm box. Not too shabby but not amazing either.

Ya 700 isn't to bad actually for the price. I did some quick math here to show how many points you get per $1
I based this off discounted price of $140 dollars for 700 points. That equals 5 points per $1. The Eldar Ghost Warriors at $240 for 1100ish points equals 4.58 points per $1.

Based on that it's pretty comparable but I think Eldar HQ choices are cheaper so that might sway it 1 way or the other depending on your view.
Also you have to see if the guants that come in the box will be used but same goes or ghost Warriors pack. I personally like to compare price to how many points you get as well as money saved.

This thread makes me excited about the upcoming Imperial Guard release, though I'm concerned them taking the piss and making it all crappy. Something like:

*1 * CCS
*2 * Infantry Squad
*2 * Penal Legion Squad
*5 * stormtroopers (with 2 flamers)
*2 * Scout Sentinals
*10 * Rough Riders

So a question to tyranid players - is everything in the 'nid box worthwhile? Will you use it all?

The plural of codex is codexes.

Personally I won't use the Gargoyles (dislike them) or the Rippers (but they're not really "models" as much as sprue filler) but I will use the Carnifex, will likely use the Termagants and will likely use the Hormagaunts.

Yeah, the fex, is usually a no brainer in a bug army.

The termagaunts are pretty much a must if you play a larger game or want to add in the big beasty that craps them out. You evidently need 30 to have the big beast as a troop choice and that only leaves 10 left to make the ones that get crapped out. So your likely gonna need to get a few more although I think I remember seeing someone convert hormagaunts into them.

hormagaunsts, Are those the ones I'm seeing people talk about having the possibility of getting poisened attacks? If so, they would definately be usefull.

The gargoyls you would essentially be getting free so even if you dont us them, you could sell or trade them to someone else (even a chaos player might want them just for the wings) or put them together just in case, same for the swarms.

Also, dont forget, if your gaming group ever plays Game master driven scenerios, you can always control them as NPCs to harry both of the players as they fight a campaign on a tyranid held world to recover an artifact or some such in which case, you could use all of the models even if you dont usually in your army.
