I was struck last night that a folding piece of wood that can unfold to 4x4 would be great for minis games like Warmachine/Hordes or Infinity.

Does such a thing exist? Have you seen or built one?

Not only have i seen it done, I've done it. Look online, you'll find plenty of guides on constructing a simple wargaming table, all you need to add on top of these guides is a cut down the middle, additional reinforcement at the joint, and some door hinges (i recommend a minimum of 2, preferably 3-4). Drawer handles will also be useful for carrying it around.

Go to your local home improvement store, and pick up a piece of sheetwood either in the size you want, or get it cut down to the right size. I got a 6X4 sheet of wood, and had it cut into two 3X4 ft sections.

Then get some planks of wood to use on the bottom of the table, i believe i used 1" by 4" planks. you need to make a box shaped frame for the sheet of wood to rest on, and another plank going down the middle for reinforcement (this reinforcement is very important). Make two of these, as you need one for each sheet of wood.

Once these two halves are finished and assembled, attach the door hinges at the bottom of the frame, such that you cannot see them when the board is fully extended. Youll have a bit of a gap, but thats the price you pay for mobility. Once that's finished add the drawer handles and your'e done!

From here you can do whatever you want with it. You can build and add folding legs onto it, or just lay it on another table (be sure to place some sort of covering down on the table, as the door hinges on the bottom of the board will scratch it). You can build a surface using industrial foam, broken into sections for easy transport, or just buy a length of felt to use as a surface. If you feel really adventurous, you can even build small storage boxes onto the bottom of the frame to hold miniatures, dice, books, etc.

Total cost for the wood, hinges, handles, various screws, felt topper, and some foam for terrain cost somewhere in the region of $100 US, so its not the cheapest route possible, but its a nice result that should last a long time with care.

I use 2 wallpaper pasting tables.
Each one is about 6ft long by 2ft wide & fold in the middle.
They cost £16 each. Their not amazingly sturdy & I might buy a couple of more expensive ones that are.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Dont have said experience yet... but I've been planning one for some time

Fingers crossed that my next free weekend will be when it starts to happen (this weekend I'm busy, but next weeks looking good hehe)

The plan is to look at those foldable pasting tables, and copy the design, beef it up slightly and have a 6by4 surface, with a lip around the edge to hold six 2by2 panels/tiles, the folds in half into 3by4, with legs that tuck away neatly akin to the pasting table legs. Another option is a fold out 'x' shaped legs...hard to put into words hehe I'm sure theres a technical name for the design

My aim is to have, when packed up, a 3foot by 4foot by a few inches box; deep enough to contain the legs, the outside would be the gaming surface - or rather where the tiles sit. This could fold up and go behind wardrobes, under beds, behind sofas etc etc
The tiles I'l be looking for a way of storing them, probably separate in a box of some description, I could however just texture the board or get a mat and box up some scatter terrain - might be better I'l have a ponder.

My brother (builder by trade) assures me its easy hehe we'l see but he's got a bunch of tools to make light work of most of it.. so he's hired! I dont need artisan carpentry here.. just solid and functional would be great!

I'l be documenting the process as best I can here on dakka hopefully.
