For my Salamander successor chapter I've decided to give them a cavern planet as their chapter planet BUT I can't think of any ideas for what the surface of the planet looks like.
I would be delighted if you could gicve me any ideas.
Doesn't matter how I came by it. Point is, this is the genuine article: a Space Marine bolter. Cursed? Only if you get caught with it. Here, I'll show you how easy it is.

Caverns? There's a few good reasons to stay underground that I can think of. The planet could be a dead rock (no or poisonous atmosphere) or a deathworld that takes too high a toll on surface population. The surface could be too hot or irradiated due to solar proximity, weak magnetic field, thin atmosphere ar a combination. It could also be under constant threat of meteor hits or alien bombardment of some kind. Note that some of this might make it hard for the marines to safely reach orbit or land.
The marines do ofc also need a reason for keeping such a world. Maybe they like training up above on good days? Maybe it's a rich mining world that supplies them with materials and recruits in return for protection? Or it's not rich at all, just a huge bastion at the edge of some alien menace the IoM wants kept under watch but can't/won't spend more resources than a dedicated Chapter on?
Instead of too hot, the planet could be too cold. with not enough thermal energy received from the sun, people could delve deeper underground to survive using the planet's geothermal energy.
An initiation test for the space marine could be to survive a journey across the surface of the planet.
Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

the only issue with this is that salamanders are borne and raised with fire, if you start doing trials involving survival in the cold then wont that dilute the chapters story?
you could think about taking the history of the planet back looking at the alien plants that cover the surface? during the HH the planet was virus bombed but there was no firestorm due to the virus eating the oganic life but the plant rapidly evolved and started consuming the virus so the spark never set hem off. over the last 10K+ years the virus and plant have been evolving to try to beat each other so much so that neither represent their original state and Asartes have become immune to the virus as it has started concentrating more on the biology of humans and less on that of post humans. the trees could start producing its own toxic smog which has the ability to fight off the virus but is much more dense causing it to sink into the caverns greaing an inhabitable atmosphere for the humans. the only way to fight the virus off is with fire as it now smoulders raher than combusts. its a fight for a planets survival.
the planet could be extremely rich in minerals which is why the mechanicum are interested in keeping it preserved. the world might hold some sort of ancient technology that until it can be moved must be protected from the continued onslaught of the Eldar

They come from this planet.

Maybe the planet has a thin atmosphere, but deep in the (many) caverns the air is normal, and further down the air pressure rises to crushing. So that chapter has a range of varying pressures to train in.

I really like the idea of the three different 'layers' to the planet. I also had an idea that there could be giant serpant-like creatures that live in the deepest tunnels. They'll have thick scaled hides to protect them from the pressure, of course it's also an excuse to put scaled cloaks on my sternguard veterans
