How well would this do in a semi competitive environment?

I like the Iron Hands portion of the list .. 4 Ironclads with dual HF in pods is nice and I've had great experiences with Ironclads lately, especially using CT Iron Hands, though I run with a mostly mech list using IH (with the Dreads being the only ones in pods for the first turn behind-the-lines strike).

The Ultra allies, I'm not sold on. What's the reasoning behind them?

Also, what are you doing with everything? What is your basic plan of attack? How are you using the toys you're bringing to the table against your enemies?

Ultramarines are better at utilizing regular troops than Iron Hands.Ironclads can use the Meltas to pop tanks or the Flamers to clean hordes. Tacs can use the Plasma guns for many things and will Beta strike to control objectives. Stormtalon for AA. Sternguard for troubleshooters.

Honestly I'm also not sold on the ultramarines. Saying they use the troops better, they only give that 1 squad their chapter tatics, and I just don't see them doing that much.

I'd say you are better dropping the allies, adding the tac to the IH so you have 4 scoring troops. Then turning the stern guard and libby into another talon for AA and a thunderfire cannon to hang out with the MotF.

The Thunderfire Cannon idea is terrible because it forces me to start something on the board. At the moment I start with nothing on the board. I see why you're questioning the allies, however I already wanted to take Sternguard, a librarian, and another Tactical so why put that into my main detachment when I can put that into an allied detachment that is only better? Tactical Doctrine > 6+. I'll definitely look into the Dual Talon idea.
