I see people use zoantropes and carnifexes in their lists and no walking tyrants.
Is not taking a tyrant a very similar thing to taking a carnifex and a zoantrope? I am looking for ways to justefy using the walking tyrant.

Almost all people give their tyrants wings so no one walks them if they are on their board. The only one could be the swarmlord and few people run him.

When Tyrants could get 2+ armor saves you would see walking tyrants now and then.
Now that they are stuck with 3+ armor saves and have no way to get an invulnerable save, there is little incentive to leave them without wings.

For long range shooty, psychic buffing, and solidarity in synapse...but then you're holding back all that tyrant goodness.
Swarmy is the answer here...for a 30" synapse bubble.

Indeed.
What I am asking is the following senario: If you are running a carnifex at what ever point cost, would it be worth it to pay 45 points for making him a master level 2 psyker?

I see what you're getting at...but I don't think it's so simple...you're comparing a hammer to a rapier.
Very different purposes and very different stalines. Automatically Appended Next Post: I heavily promote walkrants...I use one in every other game.

I think it strongly depends on the style list you play. I'm planning a list using my old 4th ed dual HVC walking tyrant as he can take the miasmic cannon and the HVC giving him two 36" Blast weapons, and some synapse extending hijinx, the tyrant and his guard are an expensive tool, but losing them wouldn't completely cripple the force, it will offer a lot of higher priority targets and shooting the tyrant and cohort would be difficult and tedious at best.
Tyrant [290]
-HVC
-Miasmic Cannon
-Norn Crown
-Electroshock Grubs
(Taking dominion primaris power to give him a standard 24" Synapse, The Grubs give him a second template weapon for two D3 hits on overwatch and haywire to discourage vehicles)
Tyrant Guard x3 [150]
(Barebone, absorb wounds, they auto pass lookout sir, so you let the tyrant tank one or two wounds if he's healthy to use regenerate, and past that put on the guards)
Deathleaper [130] (Warlord, makes him a fire magnet diverts attention from the horde, infiltrated into cover, only able to shoot snap shots at him, he'll absorb a lot. Warlord trait can swipe some VP if they ignore him)
Lictors x2 [100](Infiltrate for some up front threats with the Deathleaper, not normally a threat but made a priority by the HS choices)
Zoanthropes x2 [100] (Some backup synapse, psyker buffs)
Venomthropes x2 [90] (gotta stick them near the center to benefit the hoard unfortunaley, i'm trying to work it to be 2x2 units might drop the zoans)
Gargoyles x20 [120]
Gargoyles x20 [120] (The meat shield, rapid advance, early engagers, might blind stuff, mostly provide cover for everything behind them, but small enough no one wants to shoot them)
Hormagaunts x15 [75]
Hormagaunts x15 [75]
Hormagaunts x15 [75]
Hormagaunts x15 [75]
Hormagaunts x15 [75]
Hormagaunts x15 [75](The meat and potatoes, behind the gargoyles in front of everything else, too many of them to kill off, too many units to get them all ideally, can break off and capture stuff, i'm thinking of making it 4 units and throwing in 2 units of warriors if i get rid of the zoans)
Mawloc [150]
-Pincer Tail
Mawloc [150]
-Pincer Tail (they make the lictors real threats, worst case scenario they make the lictors fire magnets, saving a lot of the army, and they deepstrike like normal, best case they ignore the lictors and i snipe something with mawlocs, i find them invaluable for castle enemies, which i play kind of frequently, the tails are an extra attack, mainly to eat up spare points and it looks like the model has it anyways haha.)
All this for the price of 1850.

I'm going to build a walking tyrant, but as others have mentioned, will probably try running him as the Swarmlord... the normal tyrants are going to be winged.

I would trade Living Battering Ram, 3 Strength and 45 points for +5 WS, +1 BS, +3 Initiative, +1 Attack, +3 Leadership, Psyker (Mastery Level 2), Shadow in the Warp, Synapse Creature and access to Wings any day of the week.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

They perform 2 different roles. The reason I wouldn't trade one of my dakkafexes for Walking Hive Tyrant is because both my hq slots are being used by my flyrants.

The problem is, you're also trading 1/3 of a Heavy Support slot for 50% of your HQ slots. And access to wings is irrelevant, since the OP is specifically talking about non-flying Hive Tyrants.
Sure, if a Carnifex came with a 50 pt upgrade that gave him all of that, most people would take it -- but the FOC makes it not such a simple choice. You'd also be giving up a Flyrant, which most people find infinitely preferable to a Walkrant.

A flyrant is a walkrant, only faster and with the option to swoop.
