I was looking into Plague Drones for a friend and reviewing the information on Jet Pack units and realized that it says the following:

Jet Pack units can move as normal models of their type or activate their jet packs.

I looked through the FAQ and no where does it say what "activate their jet packs" equates to (unlike the Jump Unit entry). This isn't a big deal for drones which are also cavalry; however, I have had some Tau players with Crisis Suits go 12" in the movement phase. Base on how I'm reading this, were my Tau opponents incorrect? Can Crisis and Riptide units only move 6" in the movement phase?

I am not trying to rules lawyering on this one; however, I cannot find any thing that states that these Tau units can move 12" in the movement phase nor any errata that clarifies that activating jet packs is a 12" move.

Correct - Jet Packs move 6", but they can jump over terrain instead of walking through it.

The major advantage is the assault move.

Not necessarily.

A jetpack cavalry model would have a base move of 12".

OP:Jump and jet is a subtype added to other unit types, so the base speed is dependent on their base types

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

I just had to teach a Tau player (and not a new one either) the difference between jump and jet too...
When using a jet pack, a model ignores terrain, but must take a dangerous terrain test if it ends its move in terrain. Activating your jet pack means that you do that instead of walking (where you would take difficult terrain tests, etc). However, your move distance is the normal distance for your unit type (infantry, cavalry, etc).

IN THE ASSAULT PHASE, you may make a 2D6 assault move using your jet pack. If you do, you follow the previously discussed rules for moving with said jet pack: you ignore terrain and take a dangerous terrain test if you end your move in it.

It's kind of poorly worded, but that's the essence of what it says.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

Plague drones have a 12" jump move in the movement phase because they are Calvary.

Tau crisis suits have a 6" jump move in the movement phase be size they are infantry.

Both get the 2d6 assault move.
