I have just started a tyranid army and i want to magnetize all the arms on my monstrous creatures but i have no idea what size of magnets to use?

Any tyranid players out there that knows a good size that is strong enough to hold the arms?

6mm or 1/4" works well for most bits I've magnetised on my nids. Any smaller and you'll find the arms droop.

Ok great! Do you use 6mm just for the socket or both for the arm and socket?

For both. If you mismatch magnet sizes, they'll tend to be a bit sloppy as the small magnet can slide against the larger magnet. If you use 2 magnets of the same size, they lock together better than 2 different sized magnets.

Seconding 6mm x 1mm disc magnets - nearly all my MC's have these to swap weapons.

One thing to keep in mind though; to fix the magnet onto the arm it needs to be clipped or filed flat at the end. By careful what angle you do this at, as you may find the arm catches the body or another arm in a way that prevents it making flat contact.

I use 1/8 inch magnets, but usually a stack of 2-3 in each join.
