Hello there! Wargaming/modeling new guy here. I've enjoyed the DoW games for years now and I've decided to pick up the tabletop hobby. Call me unoriginal, but I just love the classic Cadian scheme that Games Workshop uses. What color paints/washes/etc would I need to try to replicate that scheme? Thank you all for your time!

Also, where can I find a set of nice brushes? I hoping to pick up the paints and brushes for around $50, no more than $100 (if need be). Thanks again!

Do you know how to mix colours?
Sorry if that sounds silly but if you can or are willing to learn then your costs can be reduced dramatically.

Everyone: No.

I don't, but I'd be more than happy to learn if that's the case.

For the most part I just buy the "academic" grade brushes from art stores. Middle of the road and usually $6-10 each. Get the 3 main brushes for models (basecoat/wash, detail, and fine detail) for $20-30.

If you aren't an expert grade painter you wont notice much of a difference with high priced professional grade brushes.

I'm still using up old GW paints so I don't know the names of the current equivalents.

For my guard which is similar to GW's scheme I use commando khaki for the fatigues, tallarn flesh (foundation) for the skin, and gretchin green (foundation) for the armour. I then give the entire model a wash of gryphonne sepia.
Highlights are done with the initial colours since they match so well but are still lighter because they're over top of the wash.
After that I just paint details. Guns are black with medium grey highlights. Metallics are boltgun metal with a black wash.

There are a lot of shots of my guard in Crabblezworth's little-camera-big-results thread here:

My models should be obvious since they are the only ones painted in the GW colour scheme.

LUTNIT, your models look wonderful! I'd love to be able to paint as well as that. Thank you for your suggestions.

Thanks. The satin spray varnish I use (Tremclad from Walmart) causes more natural highlights than a matte coat. Works really great on my Tau but does look odd on IG tanks.

If you can find them for cheaper (they usually are but not always) get some Vallejo game colour paints instead of GW. They where meant to be duplicates of GW's old line of paints and are very good quality for usually less than GW.

The conversion chart can be found here:

The model colour range is also excellent for guard armies. They tend to be more real world scale model colours so not as many bright, vibrant colours but a lot more selection for greys, tans, greens, etc.
