Hi guys, I'm brand new to 40k and inherited a bunch of Tau and making 500 point list to battle a friend of mine and play with while I learn. I'd like some input and some direction since I've never played a game but want a competitive list (as much as 500 points will allow). I've watched a ton of battle rep's and been studying the codex and rulebook. Here's what I got..

I considered taking a small pathfinder squad for marker lights thinking maybe its not worth it at 500 points. I'm playing against my friend who is also new but jacked his list from the internet, so no mercy. Hes playing Chaos Deamons. 2 units of Khorne bloodletters and 1 Demon Prince (khorne) HQ with wings/flying and tons of other upgrades I guess. That's why I'm taking all the Velocity Trackers since I dont want to not be able to handle a flying MC. I don't own any riptides yet and only have 1 broadside that isn't the old model, i have about 4 of those old ones but unsure if its legal to use them in game since the base is smaller than how they are now. I have a ton of Kroot + a shaper/lots of fire warriors/drones/a hammerhead/ 2 devilfish/ 2 piranhas/ commander hq/ shadowsun/ pathfinders/ 3 or 4 crisis/ stealth team. I was going to take the Commander HQ but for 500 points he seems to take a good chunk of that really fast. Any input or possible changes would be welcomed, I'm open to anything. We both are competitive, and as i understand tau as a whole is pretty mean, so no worries about if being a "friendly" army. Thanks in advance.

If you can get your hands on a skyray then you should have no problems alpha strike the daemon prince. I would drop the drones off the suits.

I personally wouldn't give the suits VT. I would just use twin linked pods, if you had the Skyray though.

Yea I wish I had one atm, but i'm strapped for cash for a few weeks. Those 20 points a piece buried on my crisis suits sucks. If I dropped the drones that would leave me 40 points total left over, what would you suggest spending it on?

The list looks pretty good. The amount of missile pod shots you will hit the Daemon Prince with will force wounds and the Firewarriors won't have too hard a time picking off Bloodletters. Good Luck!

Try and fit in some ML support with paths. Maybe 4 or 5.

What would you suggest removing for paths?

Just cut FW to fit them in.

As you are a new, just play as many games as you can. Just have fun. Next thing you should buy are Riptides, by far one of the codexs best models. Once you guys get to 1000 points it should be more fun

Thanks . I plan on playing a lot once i get a few more things painted and picking up prob 2 riptides a skyray and a few broadsides next

Add a commander to the shopping list. Buffmanders + HBC tide with VT will eat up a daemon prince

I already have one, painted him up first thing. Hes aesthetically awesome imo. That sounds like a good combo!

+ attached him to a HBC tide and you get twin linked, ignore cover and monster hunter. Its fantastic.

That's a pretty solid list. It's pretty much the same for mine accept with a cadre fireblade as the HQ.
