What army has the most competitive dreadnoughts (grey knights, SM, blood angels, etc)? Are there any HQs that allow one to take more than 3?

I'd like to make a small 1000 army with them as the core fighting force.

If you take space marines you can get a master of the forge.
He will allow you to take dreadnoughts as heavy support aswell as elites so you can have up to six.
Probably best to go with iron hands chapter tactics.

It's hard to choose between GK and SM. Grey Knights have access to Psyfleman, but Space Marine can have more Dreadnoughts. As SM can also have Riflemen instead, they are probably the best option.

YES! Iron hands 6 Dread list sounds AWESOME!!!

Is venerable or ironclad judged to be better? Or is it not so simple, is one better for CC and the other for shooting? What are some popular loadouts?

I'm a major noob to the SM codex!

*cough cough*
BA can have a list with 11 Dreadnoughts without double FOC or any characters.
3x Furioso (Elites)
3x Dreadnoughts (Heavy Support)
5x DC Dreads (Troops)
25x DC Marines (Troops)
1x Chaplain

1975 points without uprgades xD
Okay, just showing off here, but BA can seriously have nice Dreadnought-lists.

This is something I've been doing at 1750. It'd be easy to shrink it down to 1000, starting off with dropping the Ultramarine allies. The Ironclads I have laid out are probably the best way to run them as they have a Melta Gun and a Heavy Flamer....
