2 units of mage hunters with attachment

I'm interpreting "mage hunters with attachments" as Mage Hunter Strike Force (MHSF) with Mage Hunter Commander.

The list is only legal under Kaelyssa's theme list as it's Tier 2 bonus gives you one for free ignoring Field Allowance. Otherwise you are only allowed one. This means you got 2 pts left to play with.

However I wouldn't recommend two of the same unit, especially not for a new guy. It's rather boring and usually makes for a weak list. I would maybe go for something like this instead

Kaelyssa -7
Phoenix 10
Min MHSF + UA 7
Max Dawnguard Sentinels + UA 11

Total 21 pts

This should give you plenty of armour cracking (Sentinels) and Phoenix + MHSF can kill infantry. Kaelyssa's feat is also excellent for delivering the Sentinels.

For the remaining 4 points I would recommend looking at some of Retribution's nice solos. Example: Mage Hunter Assassin and Sylys Wyshnalyrr.

You could also go max MHSF for 3 extra pts and then add a Arcanist to help run your Phoenix.

You were correct in the interpretation. I like the looks of the dawnguard invictors over the sentinels. Are they better vs cost? (don't know the cost/rules for either) I was thinking of filling the last few point with Mage hunter assassins anyway so i'm glad to hear that they aren't bad

Automatically Appended Next Post:
bear in mind I'm still very much a 40k guy and have a lot of 40k mentality. (which would explain the 2 of the same unit)

The only things I would take in duplicate are utility offense solos, such as the Mage Hunter Assassin. They work better in pairs since your opponent can usually deal with one without investing too much effort.

Multiple MHA is always fun. Just generally avoid duplicating units (there is exceptions such as stormfall archers).

Invictors are very good shooters and decent melee, they're rather expensive pointswise however 8/12 for 6/10 models and UA (which they need). Highly accurate shooting with the UA. And I agree they look cooler than the Sentinels.

Sentinels have no range but fantastic melee. They have good MAT (usually hit 'normal' targets), Reach (2 inch melee range rather 0.5 inch) which is great, and are weapon masters (roll 3 dice damage instead of 2, if charge 4) which just wreaks everything.

I recommended Sentinels because they are a melee threat to complement your MHSF and they can make good use of Kaelyssa's feat. And they wreak things with much armour which the MHSF can struggle with.

But I want to note that Sentinels aren't straight up better than the Invictors, it all depends on the rest of the list. Sentinels are more popular because they fulfil the role destroying high armour targets which the rest of the retribution can struggle with.

Another option is the Houseguard Halberdiers, 9 pts for full unit with UA, +2 pts for the Houseguard Thane solo. Quite hard hitting on one turn thanks to a mini-feat from the UA. They are also faster than the Sentinels, especially with the Thane solo.

It's a good list to start with! Playing with what you already have is always good, as it lets you learn what it can do.

The Manticore is decent, covering fire is quite nice. A nice trick is to use it to protect a model from enemy melee infantry. Drop the covering fire template over the model you want to protect after the model has activated. Any infantry that comes into melee must go through the covering fire template and take a POW 12 hit which usually kills 1 wound models.

One thing you might want to try is getting two arcanist solos, the help immensely with the warjacks. But then again two assassins are always nasty.
