Hey guys,
Finally stopped modelling and decided that I was really lagging on the painting front. I have wanted to try this technique for ages. and here are the results! extremely happy with this first attempt

I apologise for any poor quality shots, I was in a rush of excitement to get them up I wasn't gona bother before and just wait till the end, but I enjoyed the process so much I had to share most fun technique ever! I am going to repeat the same technique now to do a paint layer so that way I should in the end have a 3 tone style of paint, metal, rust.

By far the best trick I found was to vary the rust colour. I used a light brown red and yellow and started with a lighter base coat and then darkened and shaded slightly. I think it really helps the rust look dynamic. Although think that detail might be lost in the photos.

Rust colours do vary and you should do a better set of pics to show off the models properly.

Better pics may be needed, but it's a good start.

Try searching for rust tutorials on the web. You may be surprised at what you find.
You're next attempt is pretty much guaranteed to be better if you're following a good guide.
Tutorials have helped me pick up more than a few new techniques.

Here are a few Tutorials I found just now.

You also may want to look into salt weathering, you can get some great results there.

Good luck!

Tbh its better if you follow the pics to my gallery, the zoom function gives you a much better chance to see the rust in detail. I would take more pictures but I probably wont get the time. (as soon as I get home they are getting the next layer of paint! )

I have looked into other rust techniques and products but felt they were either very time consuming (sponging, painting by hand), whereas products for rust tend to be a little pricey for something I can do myself. Saying that I might try rust powders at some point.
