I am planning on doing a jungle table but am having trouble deciding which colors would look the best. I know that most jungles and forests have a layer of mulch instead of grass. My question is what would be the best color to properly represent this? My first layer of paint will be black (mixed with glue) to seal the sand but past that I'm lost on the color choices. So fellow Dakkaites, if it were you, what woul be uour choices?

I would probably go with a mottled mix of a dark brown and mossy green (shouldn't be too much work to apply with two spray cans and a bit of sponge/stippling work - more than a basecoat+drybrush job, but doesn't require an art degree and a full weekend, either). As you say, the floor and pathways wouldn't likely be grass-green, but going for straight mulch/soil will likely look odd unless you cover almost all of the board with foliage, leaving bare board showing only in small paths and clearings. I think it would be the best compromise, especially if carried over onto the bases of your eventual terrain.

Thanks for the reply! And you're right, a straight "mulch" board would look a bit odd! I did notice in the pics of jungles that I found on google had a thick layer of green moss in places on the jungle floor. This might be just what I'm after. I just don't want to get the "jungle plants in a pasture" look!

I am thinking (from a quick browse) that jungle floors are more dirt than moss, at most a 50/50 mix

I'd probably do your sand base in a combination of browns moving up to tans (like above you could use spray cans for the most part) and throw splotches of moss (and other drybrushed) greens scattered around here and there for flavor (either just paint or actual flock, but I'd probably go with paint just for durability).

Then of course you want a bunch of scatter terrain to give it foliage.

Wow that table is incredible... for my next table I am going to go a little more alien ...channeling the old 'Heavy Metal' movie with a light blue, orange, and pink airbrush-ish type look.
