I have no idea if this is the right section, so I'll preface this with an apology if I got my boards wrong.

Some friends and I have looked to make 40k/Wargaming more portable and have been looking at making a table for a good long time. An idea that came up was that one could make a lightly textured chalkboard and make it collapsible. Collapsible ideas proposed were hinges or fitting edges with magnets embedded to keep it together. Regardless, the chalkboard idea was fairly well received and I'd like to know if this is a bad plan or if this would have been done by anyone. The general inspiration for it was lines/borders/notes could be easily drawn without the need for excess dice at hand or area terrain/blasts/rivers/etc. I haven't had any luck finding anything similar online (granted I haven't searched much). We have a fairly flexible budget of pooled contributions we can work with so a variety of ideas would be welcome. Mostly I'm looking for thoughts on the chalkboard table and/or other portable/collapsible table ideas.

Note: We have a home-made table now, but it's far from portable and is borrowed from a local relative who had several tables.

I have two of these that clamp together, I then put a GW battlemat on them for fantasy and turn it over to the black side for 40k. Couple of eyelets in each corner pulls it tight over the tables et voila... Perfectly flat surface to game on and portable. Can be setup in minutes and taken down just as quick. The legs store in the table so no lugging them about and if I want to game outside for the 1 day in the year it's sunny in the UK I can... even had a BBQ going whilst gaming with my m8s. Bliss

Try 2x wall paper pasting tables - the come foldable with handles. Just paint the top in your chosen colour & away you go.
Here's what I mean in case you don't get my UK lingo:

At £90 & not 6"x4", a TT table isn't quite right IMO:

You might be able to get a cheap second hand one though & glue on a bigger top...

Only £44.50ish delivered. A bit narrow at 76cm though (=30" - need 48" or 122cm)

Will keep hunting as I need a more sturdy solution too.
