If the file was bought from the artist, for personal use, do you think this could be 3D printed?

Would make a sweet Venerable Battlebarge and could come up with rules for it using the smotherman formula I am sure. Or is the model too detailed?

Hmm, too detailed isn't the problem, thing is whether you could even see all those details and paint over them. Then of course there's the price. I think that printing such a model could only be done at places who have super good equipment, making it a rather expensive project. Shapeways doesn't offer the quality needed for this, but something like Micro RP might be the way to go, but then expect to pay probably $500 for a print...

Yeah true, but considering how much battlebarges are going for on eBay, might not be too far off price-wise.

I might contact the artist and see if I could get a toned down version. Anything to keep BFG alive and strong!

Ah, an area I have some experience in...

So I can guarantee you that model is not ready for 3D printing. Most of the detail is going to be lost, regardless of what printer you're using, but that's not the issue. The real issue is that, as-is, that model has lots of very thin and fragile structures that no printer is going to replicate. I don't know how much work it would be for the person to roll the model back to include less thin wires etc that would get the model rejected from Shapeways, or whether they'd be willing to give/sell you the model at all.

Honestly a printable marine battle barge is something I could knock out in a week of free time, but I know it would draw the Eye of Sauron back to my shop.

Solid model and then printed with a machine that can handle the detail, like this fellow. But there would still be a lot of fragile structures and such.

As for the Eye of Sauron: start making your own designs, you've got the skills!
