Subject: Space Marine knowledge on the old legions

Currently, I'm writing a story about space marines facing members of the alpha legion.
My question is whether a high ranking member of the space marines would have knowledge of them or would they have to do some research.
My reasoning for not being familiar about them is that they are very rare (compared to other legions) and very secretive. This would mean that, other than old stories from the heresy, there wouldn't be much common knowledge on them.
So what do you think: if a captain heard their name, would he have to do some homework first?

The Alpha Legion is infamous, but IIRC, most knowledge on the Alpha Legion is from the Alpha Legion. So they probably won't have the best information on them besides lies based upon lies. Now, the Black Legion would be something entirely, just that the Alpha Legion are like an army of memetic CIA/MI6 agents that nobody really knows heads or tails about. If he heard about them, he'd have all sorts of stories and horror stories swimming through his head and would probably be even scared, considering a single Alpha Legion agent with backing from the Black Legion managed to kill a whole Chapter of Space Marines with a single fell swoop.

That's eerily close to the story I have. They find a dead marine from the black legion and by chance, some of the paint chips off the shoulder, revealing an alpha legion symbol underneath.

Never underestimate the skill of the Alpha Legion in subversion and destruction.
