Well, first off, there are online retailers who give 20% off. I have dealth with Neil at thewarstore and he has always gone above and beyond to help me.

Secondhand of pre-bought models are also a good place to get deals. Just be sure to get pictures and details of what your getting beforehand.

Other companies. For example, those who like the death Corps of Krieg models but dont wanna spend the $, could get stormtrooper models off of wargames factory, they also put out other models that could be used. They arent the only other option but it could be a start. Think 18 guys for less than the price of 10 GW guys.

Ogryn can be converted from fantasy ogres and spare autocannons. I've got pics of the end result in my gallery. Much cheaper than metal ones.

heavy weapon teams. Put the HB, AC, LC onto horse bases, since only one tripod comes for each team, find other things to mount them on. Put the morter on a tery base and attach the missile launcher to a standing body. Dont put the spare ammo/batteries on. Save those for making objectives.
Put the gunners on 25 mm bases and set them so you can just set them next to the guns. get some spare 60mm bases. Game time, put on whatever combo you like. use normal standing soldiers to be extra gunners.

i made a vendetta conversion outta a dakkajet. Not everyone's cup of tea but I've gotten nothing but compliments on it and a lot cheaper than the official model.

Magnets. i magnatize sarges arms but eventually just glued them after realizing I wasnt gonna waste points on postol upgrades.

Too add to the above, some more suggestions for building IG on the cheap:

Warzone miniatures, now produced by Prince August models.
http://shop.princeaugust.ie/warzone-mutant-chronicles-wargame/warzone-games-expansion-sets/tg2420-1-warzone-mutant-chronicles-bag-of-80-plastic-soldiers/

80 models for just over £20 including P&P. They may be old scuplts but they're plenty detailed for horde guard, and look awesome. You get 2 distinct styles in the bag, but if you want 80 of one style then your best bet is to find another local IG player in need of more cannon fodder and do a buy-two-and-swap thing, or you could mix-and-match the two styles to create your own look. Personally, I just use them as 2 separate platoons, and they're easy to identify that way.

If you want quantity, these are the models to go for.

Mantic Games' Corporation Marines:
http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/warpath/corporation.html

Far more realistically proportioned that GW IG, and also cheaper, these guys make great stand-ins for Elysian Drop Troops or Hakoni Warhawks (or any other high-tech or specialised regiment) as they have a very sci-fi look to them. The army deals give great savings, and you get a load of special weapons with each set. They also make great veterans.

Also check out Mantic's Enforcers, which make great stormtroopers.

Dreamforge Games' Eisenkern Stormtroopers:
http://www.waylandgames.co.uk/dreamforge-games/cat_1657.html
Regarded as some of the best hard plastic infantry models on the market, these guys are still cheaper than GW and their heavy-armour looks makes them a great stand in for anything in Carapace Armour, be it Vets or Stormtroopers.

Also, they make 80-quid titan-sized Walkers. What's not to love?

Where IG players will struggle to find alternatives at the moment is vehicles. The trick of using historical tanks doesn't work thanks to GW's odd scaling, and no other company really produces 28mm tanks that are noticeably cheaper than GW. However, if you are willing to put the time and effort in to learn how to scratch-build tanks, you can put out decent homemade tanks for under a tenner using plasticard. It takes a lot of time and practice, but could be a great money-saver in the long run.

Forge World is definitely not a cheaper option.

AS for Wargames Factory, the only figures they make that fit in 40k's heroic 28mm scale are the Stormtrooper sets. The rest of their figures are true 28mm and will look puny and pinheaded next to GW figures on the table unfortunately. :(

The FW Hazardous Environment SWS is a definite money saver over buying 3 Platoon Command Squads for each Vet Squad.

I think I wasnt clear. I had only mentioned FW because the wargames factory stormtroopers looked a lot like them. I was pointing this out so that just in case someone DID like the DKoK models, these others might be an option.
I mixed mine with GW special and heavy weapons and think they look nice.

A side note, I used mutant chronicles models to make a couple nice chaos marine conversions, Do they have many models that would fit guard or guard vehicles?

IG tanks are easy enough to scratch build out of plasticard or even cardboard. Maybe just buy proper guns from bitz sites.

You can make a rebel Grot army using IG rules, the Grots are much cheaper than IG infantry. Gives you some leeway with scratch building tanks, too.

Then there's the illegal chinese elephant in the room, of course.

Somewhere in south-central England.

The cheapest way to do an IG army is not to use GW models. There are plenty of modern/near future/further future figures available, some of which are mentioned by Paradigm.

For vehicles, look at 1/48 or 1/35 scale model kits. There are a reasonable number of SF kits around, or you can easily convert real world vehicles.

Either go ebay with a tank company list . could get a legal army under 150$ .

Get cheap GW or non GW models , when there are 100+of them no one will notice what they are made of and from what firm they come form.

Eiskern weapon platforms are very good standins for saber weapon platforms and give parts to squad heavy weapons too.

Vendettas are more or less the only models that need to be GW, because I haven't yet found a company that makes models the same size that would fit in to IG.

Heres what i use for my DKoK.
http://www.thewarstore.com/product82106.html

I got them even cheaper than that, when they were on kickstarter. Still, $32 for 20 guys is a steal. They also sell accessory sprues (got them for free) that have enough parts to outfit all 20 guys with some pretty silly quantities of bling.

In person these guys look pretty impressive. They have ~10 different poses, so are quite varied, and can easily hold Imperial weapon for things like plasma guns (bought some FW legion plasma guns, though they are slightly large).

There are several tutorials for this which you can easily find by using Google,
but I believe GW prevented this method by making the Gorgon models smaller than the regular ones (24mm iirc).

There was a tutorial somewhere about it. It takes a very patient hand to slowly carve out each guy but it can be a bit of savings.

I've heard mixed results here. Firstly the are slightly smaller than full size. Secondly there can be a lot of scuplting involved as you cut apart the rows of troopers into individuals. So what you might save on money initially will be respent in time and effort converting them into usable troops.

Several people have done it. I've considered it myself, but it seems like quite a lot of work to do it. I think if you don't want to waste a lot of time, you're probably best off NOT trying to get all 50 models, but instead just take the easier ones. Even if you can only salvage 20-30 of them, that's still half the price of buying the squads individually. You do have the size difference that someone mentioned, though.

They look good... but not as good as DKOK IMO. The reason I want DKOK isn't because I want to play DKOK so much as DKOK are frakking awesome models. I'd be happy enough to use DKOK as regular IG. I'm tempted to buy 2 squads of DKOK and a HQ squad just to use them as my command and IG veterans and/or storm troopers.

Though I'll wait until the new Codex comes out before I jump in to any DKOK I think.

DKOK is the perfect example that GW/FW is perfectly capable of making some of the most awesome models, but instead of releasing them to general public, they just get relegated to expensive specialist service that is FW.
