Hey,
One thing I've found for myself is that i use chaos daemons as a allies detachment for csm but i do play them separately as well. Chaos daemons die... a lot and you can do nothing (nice to know) even some nurgle routes arn't enough.

For tanks tau wise you can take some strong tzeenetch units (and basic troops) as you can pull really heavy tanks (Land-raider like) down.

For broadsides or a troop fireline i would suggest starting the game with tzeenetch and slaanesh fast attack options as well as 1-2 basic squads (one has to be strong nurgle). This army sect is to worry the opposition and get them going all out for 1-2 turns on them (mabye even add a soul grinder to scare them).

The next step is to deepstrike a heck of a lot of nurgle to the heavy elites areas. as many as possible as their poison kills the heavier troops easy. Also bring in bloodletters and also some big weps and units such as a great unclean one.
The bloodletters wipe out basic troops and the great unclean one (or other) kills the scary units.

Points wise i would say give 70% of it to nurgle and tzeenetch as they play the biggest roles in the success. 20% to khorne and 10 to slaanesh.

As i always say this is my personal favored tactic and may not suit you or anyone else. Plz dont get pissed if it doesnt work (those tau blighters and their big guns).

yours chaotically,
grazgahull ominispec.

There are myriad competitive Daemon lists. With that said if certain thins are happening your sunk regardless.

If you deploy in such a way that his firebase is in range first turn unimpeded the casualties will mount. Hand in hand is terrain, you have to have LOS blocking terrain or your playing on a soccer match. Also make sure your not just rushing out unsupported, you will face his firepower and die. Are you setting out troops that can just be reserved later and still do their job? They are your scoring and are worthless mowed down early. You have the best use of a psychic phase, are you unfamiliar with it?

Generics aside here are the best lists in order of difficulty to use. All of them use Fateweaver, don't ask he's just too good.

Rush list: take your favorite fast attack unit and spam the blazes out of them. Dogs are the fave though you can use screamers, drones and fiends. Attach a herald for locus and challenge sillies. Daemonettes and horrors are your two best choices here ( and really for any list). Soulgrinders synergize well.

Bomb list: hide hard to get to icons and second turn flood accurate deep strikers. Slightly harder to use but more devastating, plus you can use wider model selection. You can take your favorite stuff here.

Flying circus: current king of the hill. Go to daemons40k.blogspot.com and read everything, dude knows his stuff and its his baby.

Screamerstar: pile a ton of screamers in with 4 tzentch heralds on disk. Get forewarning from all the divination rolls and grimore the unit... Then profit. The army is unfun to play and easy to counter for certain army/builds but boy its a noobslayer. You can output an uncomfortable number of shots.

Always take Fateweaver, usually ally chaos for a dragon and/or Belakor. Play with line of site blockers, play to the mission, etc.
