The North

Hello one and all

I'm considering a venture into the territory of Codex: Orks and have a number of questions and a prototype army list; 'ere we go

i: I have not yet bought any models
ii. I'm trying for a WW2 German Trenchers / Artillery theme
iii. I'm not interested in breaking the bank and buying loads of flyers and so on. Something a bit varied is of interest that's fun
iv. I've no clue when it comes to playing orks. Smushing them yes, but not playing as them - so expect some painfully daft choices

1) The list itself that I have come up with:

HQ
Warboss
‘Ard Armour
‘Cybork body
Twin-linked shoota
Power Klaw
Total: 120pts

Troops
X26 Slugga Boyz
x1 Nob
Big Choppa
Bosspole
‘Eavy Armour
Total: 181pts

X12 Shoota Boyz
Trukk
Reinforced Ram
Total: 112pts

Elite
X5 Lootas
Total: 75pts

X5 Lootas
Total: 75pts

X5 Burna Boyz
Total: 75pts

Heavy
Big Gunz
x2 Lobbas
X5 Krew
X2 Ammo Runts
Total: 74pts

Looted Wagon
Boomgun
Reinforced Ram
Grot Riggers
Total: 115pts

Battlewagon
Deff rolla
X4 Rokkit Launchas
Total: 150pts

Fortifications
Aegis Defence line with Quad gun

Tactics (intention)

Shoota boyz ride up in trukk to give support to Sluggaz
Sluggaz run up the field using cover to get into CC with enemy
Looted Wagon stays behind something (like troops to prevent 'don't touch that!') softening up enemy infantry / light vehicles
Battlewagon with Burna Boys / Warboss in rampages up to tank shock / take out vehicles and make those who assault back do the burny dance.
Lootas sit back on defence line / in terrain and shoot away
Aegis defence line for AA
Lobbas placed out of LOS behind/in terrain OR behind Aegis Defence Line - support / pain in the backside

Questions:
1) Weaknesses / strengths summary
2) What models/upgrades in that list can I live without?
3) What models/upgrades are essential that aren't there?
4) If modifications are suggested - please explain why (I'm keen to learn!)
5) What tactics would you suggest (if different to my intention)

Many Thanks in advance,

Wulfmar

Thousand Sons: 3850pts / Space Marines Deathwatch 5000pts / Dark Eldar Webway Corsairs 2000pts / Scrapheap Challenged Orks 1500pts / Black Death 1500pts

Saga: (Vikings, Normans, Anglo Danes, Irish, Scots, Late Romans, Huns and Anglo Saxons), Lion Rampant, Ronin: (Bushi x2, Sohei), Frostgrave: (Enchanter, Thaumaturge, Illusionist)

Hey, welcome to Orkdom. Let me offer some tips based on my experience.

IMO, this list is a bit light on troops. Ork boys are great infantry for their cost so having a whole lot of them is one of the codex's biggest strengths. The age-old mantra is Boys Before Toys!

A few things you could take out to save on points:

-The rokkit launchas on the battlewagon aren't going to do you much good for how many points they cost. I usually just put one or two big shootas on it to keep weapon destroyed results from immobilising it.

-The trukk for that squad of shoota boys feels out of place. The advantage of trukks is how quickly they get your boys into the enemy's face, but without any support from other trukk squads they'll get taken apart real quick. Generally the idea is to either put all the boys in trukks, or none of them. Lose the trukk and make that squad bigger, and give them a nob.

-The warboss is an excellent HQ choice. But at 1000 points I feel like a big mek with a kustom force field is a better one. 5++ for all the troops around the battlewagon is a huge boon, it's saved my army on several occasions. And you can give him a burna too, so he's coordinated with his bodyguards

-Looted wagons with boomguns can be spectacular, but they are unreliable at best. I can almost guarantee you'll find the same amount of points put into more boys and burnas will give you better returns. The lobbas and lootas can fill that artillery role just fine.

And that's my two cents. TL;DR, get some more boys and burnas.

Best of luck with your Waaghing

Ditto on Jambles post. Good stuff.

If you are just starting out. Boyz are the way to go. You can always find someone on ebay or your local hobby shop willing to unload their Orks.

I love Big Shootas. For 5pts they are a great addition to every multiple of 10 Orks. Try for 30 Boyz squads with shootas and 3 Big shootas. At 18in range there isn't much you can't shoot off the table, excepting AV 11 vehilcles and high toughness monsters. In a 1000 pt army I would start with 2 squads of 30 shoota boyz, each with 3 big shootas and a Big Mek with KFF, PK, bosspole, 'eavy armor, cybork body. That is a great core of the Ork strong suit and then build from there.

Love Lootas

Love Burna boyz

Possibly a squad of Killa Kans with Grotzookas

Orks is shooty, which plays to the paradigm shift of 6th Ed, with a de-emphasis on CC.

Seattle

Using a loota on the quad is a waste. Pick up 10 gretchin and a runt herd if you want the quad. That way you get the BS of 4 on the quad and an extra scoring unit for those near side objectives. I believe the quad can shoot at ground targets as well. So turn one 4 twin linked BS4 S7 shoots will come in handy.
