I picked up 3 new armies on the weekend end for a steal ($500 for about 6200pts) and 1 of them was Space Wolves. In the purchase were 6 Thunderwolf Cavalry units. After playing around on Battlescribe for a bit and some speed reading of the codex which I picked up last night I really really like the Thunderwolf Cavalry from the looks to the rules but they are so expensive points wise. I'm wondering if they are worth their points (of course used with LoS blocking terrain and a screen of normal wolves). Do they make their points back or am I better spending the points somewhere else? (I will already fill out the heavy slots with Long Fangs and will have at least 4 teams of Grey hunters with drop pods).

Thunderwolves have trouble with S10 shooting, but as long as you avoid those Vindicators or take them out wiht your Long Fangs they won't be a huge problem. Thunderwolves are nasty, and lords on Thunderwolves are nastier. They're a tough, dangerous unit.

Expect people to learn quite fast how dangerous they are. That will mean it's going to be a unit that will receive a lot of attention and it's too expensive for my liking.

On the other hand they are pretty cool.

The screen of wolves I 'dont know if it's going to work..

Why wouldn't the wolf screen work? They should cover enough of the other models to provide a cover save at least and if they rush first they can eat the over watch so my Thunderwolves don't have to.

Well, you generally won't have to worry about Thunderwolves taking overwatch fire. BS1 and wounding against T5 tend to make overwatch pretty ineffective against them. If you really do fear lasguns and bolters that much, go ahead, but I don't think the wolf screen is necessary for that. As a roving cover save, that I can see a use for. Fenrisian Wolves aren't super duper cheap though, and it's really easy to overload on toys in a Space Wolves list.

Yeah I've noticed that lol, trying to make 2 lists; 1 for 500pts and another for 1999. It's turning out to be a fairly big challenge. I'm open to any suggestions

They pay for it by being space-traveling superhumans riding on mutated dogs. Not everything that looks cool spraypainted on your truck's hood is automatically a reasonable military tactic, but hey, werewolves in SPEHSSS!!!
