If not taking a list tailored to a particular opponent, in your opinion, does the 12" flame 'throw' of the hellhound out-do the ap3 and 2+ poisioned of the Bane wolf? Both are fast so moving 12" isn't a problem. But in your experience, does the extra 12" range really pay off the extra destructive potential?
I see the Hellhound usually wounding on a 2+ anyway, but doesn't the extra ap and poisioned status give the bane wolf a greater versatility in an all rounder list, against say the meq and MCs you will be guaranteed to face at some point?

I'd go with the hellhound all the time, simply because you can use it without being in pretty-much-automatic charge range, so you can feasibly get more than one shot off. The ability to position the template with more freedom means you'll get more hits in total. The Banewolf is just going to get CC-ed to death after the first shot.

Fair point. What about supporting an assult list? Although I suppose a Baal with flamestorm and heavy bolters could do the job better for just 15pts more...

Hellhounds are much, MUCH better than banewolves.

To begin with, at S6, a hellhound is wounding practically everything on 2's anyways, so that poison isn't real helpful. Meanwhile, S6 can also cause ID to T3, and it can also hurt vehicles (and ignore cover and jink saves in the process). Meanwhile, neither weapon is AP2, and both weapons are at least Ap4, which means that there's only a single armor save class wherein you have the potential to do more damage.

But that's not even that likely in reality. Without torrent, it's super easy for opponents to avoid getting hit by the flamer template at all, given the range, and it's really easy to spread out in such a way where the perpendicular blast only hits a couple of models. Meanwhile, the hellhound has the reach to actually get to shoot a couple of times, and with the ability to twist the template, it's much, much harder to spread out to avoid taking hits. And against MEq - the only target range where the hellhound isn't just straight better - you only need to hit 3 times as many models to cause the same number of wounds, which sounds like a lot, but I guarantee that it's easier to rack up with a 12" torrent weapon than a 0" template weapon.

That means, assuming basic competence on your opponent's side, that the hellhound will always do more damage, and more quickly, to every target type.

I can't say anything about the baal flamestorm, but I can say that hellhounds can take multimeltas, which makes them reasonably versatile.

If you have the MM on the Hellhound try to shoot at a vehicle and then bank the torrent template off of side armour to cover as many inf models.

Or if you're up against flimsy vehicles, you can bank it onto another vehicle. I've seen a lot of DE armies where they pack the board with their cardboard boxes, and have seen situations where you could score a S6 hit on two or three of them with a single torrent weapon.

4+ to hurt and ignores jink save. Not the best anti-tank weapon in the world, but I've certainly shot the inferno cannon at vehicles before.
