Terminator with Assault Cannon

I was smashed. It was great!
I used ten terminators and five tactical marines, five tactical marines as well as a captain and three bikes and a ven dread and scouts in a ruin.
the random guy used ten assault marines, tem tactical marines, calgar and honour guard in a pod and a ven dread.
terminator squad one is killed by assault marines first tern, bikes shot to death first turn, my dread wrecked first turn, six tacticals killed turn two.
turn three second termi squad arrive, get thot and two die, assault and kill all of the scouts, and the two tacs left charge calgar, AND DO A WOUND! calgar kills them, orbital strikes the termis, I roll 5 5 6!
then a bolt round kills a termi. at this point he had to leave, but it was so much fun. im thinking of going every Thursday night from now on!

Good that you enjoyed it. Playing outside your group usually makes you a better player as it exposes you to new styles and tactics and sometimes even new interpretations of the rules. Sometimes, it can be frustrating and sometimes, you will end up facing the dreaded " TFG ". overall, you will find your playing skill increase.
I would encourage the rest of your group to do the same.

That is a great story!

I also agree with Evil'Inc' point about the benefits of the experience.

One important point however - when playing new players - its important to politely ask them about their perspective on terrain, or any other ...fuzzy...rules your group may have interpreted a certain way.

For example, some people treat a piece of hill terrain with some trees on it as area terrain, others would treat the top as just some LOS blockers, others might only treat the sides of the hill as difficult....etc.

Best of luck and have fun!

I don't know, I think your skill only improves if you play against better players. If you play with a certain group until you're all of roughly the same level, and then you go and play with a bunch of people who play worse odds, if anything I'd think that would make you a worse player (because you'd get lazy) rather than better.

Anyways, I'm glad the OP had fun. The best part of playing with new people is that it gives you a chance to expand your pool of people you like playing with.

Frequency of play helps also.

Three things about playing outside the group you normally do:

1. It's more interesting. No offense of course to my core group, but new is new.
2. The number of games wherein you can learn the tolerances of your OWN army, the better you get, no matter the quality of the opponent. So just expanding your opportunities immediately makes you better. Going outside the group gets you that.
3. Going outside the group makes it easier to prepare for different armies in tournies. "All comers" lists don't happen overnight. they usually start as some attempt at making a certain THING work against a frequent opponent. Over time and with more people involved, the list morphs to be "pretty good" and "okay" against everything, but never overwhelmed by anything. Thsoe lists are the ones that really teach you to be a General. And getting outside your group thusly makes your all comers list come togetgher all that much more quickly.

Kudos for fun. This game's player base is wayy too competitive for a game that has lost it's competitive touch...

Even if the "new" plyers you are going out to play are of a "lower skill level", that does not mean that you cant learn from them. New perspectives and ideals/tactics can come from the most unlikely of places. Besdies if your the better player, then they are learning from you as well and you are essentially also training a new opponent who will eventually give you more of a challenge as their skill increases.

You learned wrong. They're cool, but don't come close to being the most effective thing in the book. Not that that's a problem, I don't play terribly competitive games and they have their place, but they're far from the best thing in the codex. There's other things (TH/SS Terminators) that do their job better.

The champion or something had seven (or was it six?) attacks and killed my captain in one turn.

I love the honor guard! They are pretty amazing, especially for their point cost. The only thing they need is FnP or an Invuln. But if they had that, they should be worth a lot more points. And yeah the champion should have had around 6 attacks. 3 base, +1 for charge, +1 for two CCW and +1 for banner. Stick a chaplain in there for the rerolls in the first round.
