ISAF officials in Afghanistan have confirmed a military dog went missing during a mission in December last year.

US military sources say the dog belonged to a coalition partner and the BBC understands it was working for British forces.

The Taliban earlier released footage of what they claimed was a dog they captured from US troops.

They said the dog, apparently called Colonel, was wearing a GPS tracking device, a torch and small camera.

Looking rather mournful, on a lead being held by a long-haired Taliban fighter, the small reddish-brown dog was paraded for a Taliban cameraman, reports the BBC's David Loyn in Kabul.

The Taliban said the dog was taken during a night raid in Laghman in eastern Afghanistan in late December.

The insurgents also showed off captured weapons of a type frequently used by American special forces.

Our correspondent says there were local reports a few weeks ago that a senior Taliban commander in the area was seen with a "foreign dog".

But the video is the first positive sighting.

Coalition forces have long used sniffer and protection dogs in Afghanistan, mostly German shepherds, Labradors or spaniels.

It is unclear on the BBC if this is a British dog or an American dog (the article link says American but the actual article claims it is British) but either way I cannot imagine this will end well for the dog.

It seems like there is more to this story than what is being reported.

Apparently a special forces unit was raided by Taliban fighters and the dog and some weapons were taken. What about the special forces themselves? Also, if the dog had GPS on it as the Taliban are claiming, why wasn't that used to determine its location immediately after the attack?

It is possible that the Special Forces units could of let the dog get captured and maybe they would hope that the Taliban would transport the dog to other locations so they could pin point multiple Taliban staging areas and fortifications. The camera could have been recording and feeding images back to intelligence units and it is possible that there is a team following the dog and conducting recon ops where ever the dog is transported. But maybe I have been playing too much Call of Duty Ghosts

Or it could be that upper command dose not care and may consider it a waste of resources to attempt to recover the dog or the equipment taken by the Taliban. Witch is a more than likely scenario

But really who knows

How the feth did they loose those guns and a dog?

I really would like to see all these guys dead not only because they are acid throwing, women oppressing, education hating feths that wouldn't deserve the quenching of piss if they were on fire, but also because they have a dog that they are most definitely going to kill. Why can't Coalition Forces parade them around before they shoot them?

My secret fortress at the base of the volcano!

I feel bad for the dog, which will probably be killed by the Taliban (most likely for being an infidel)... but on the other hand...

This is what the Taliban consider a VICTORY.

They caught a dog.

Things are going so well for them that they have to call the BBC and let them know that they caught a dog. I'm absolutely astounded that these guys never managed to storm the White House, considering that they are able to overpower and capture our most highly trained and motivated special forces operatives, like the poor unfortunate PFC Fido.

If I were the Taliban, I wouldn't be calling the BBC to let them know the highlight of this season's military operations was the capture of a dog. I would just teach the little guy to fetch, read him the Qur'an at night, and try to get him to grow a proper Muslim beard.

But what do I know? I'm the guy who spent several years fruitlessly trying to teach my cat to fist-bump.

There's a decent chance they caught a stray, hung some crap on it to make it look like a vest, and declared victory.

Not discounting that the Taliban are full of gak, and I hope this is merely a pathetic publicity stunt on their part, but if the story is true then I am curious about the special forces unit that was raided. Were any human personnel injured or killed? Supposedly the Taliban group in question has weapons "of a type frequently used by American special forces" but what does that mean? Did this group of Taliban come across an outpost or camp that was unattended and make off with some loot? Is that even plausible? Was there a firefight? If so, and the dog was discovered missing, was the GPS tapped to see where it was? Lots of gaps in the story that leave me scratching my head.

The US seems to be backing that a British dog was taken, and they believe this is it.

If he was an american dog he’d have had a flashlight instead of a torch. Or a pitchfork to go with it.

I'd like to know how they went about capturing a dog that was probably trained to kill. On top of that, I wouldn't think it would be far from the handler.

I'm not to boned up on that, but I don't think all bomb dogs are trained to kill.

I think it was a British forces dog. I wonder what happened that caused the dog to be separated from his handler
