Hey guys,

I introduced myself about three or four days back and have been hard at work trying to put paint to my new minatures.

I'm new the game for the sake of those that don't know, have never done minature collecting or playing before.

I've chosen the Raptor Chapter, Space Marines. Successor of the Raven Guard.

Right now I'm working on my first squad, it's a tactical squad and I've got this Veteran Sergeant in progress. I started on him last night but I just need to attach his bolt pistol and also a small banner on his jump pack.

Comments and criticisms.

I need to work on my painting skill, it's really difficult due to the size of these minatures (they are tiny). I can't quite wrap my head around some of the paintings you guys produce, it's incredible!

Anyway, first minuature ever here you go!

More to come, I'll post one soon once I get some tacticals next to my Sergeant and he's fully completed!

Welcome!

You picked an awesome chapter to start out with, the Raptors are my favorite chapter. If that is your first mini, you are definitely on your way to some impressive results; that it very well done with a nice attention to detail.

I personally am not a fan of the yellow helmet, I don't feel it fits with the Raptors aesthetic. That being said, precise details on Raptors rank designation is pretty scarce so there is plenty room for improvisation. I personally designate my sergeants with a red stripe on their left shoulder just to keep it subtle. I feel the same way about backpack banners; Raptors aren't really an "in your face" chapter like Ultramarines. There are some pictures in my gallery if you are interested in how I paint my Raptors.

You are off to an awesome start so keep up the good work and share pictures with us whenever you can!

I've got another 5 marines primed and I'm hoping to at least get 3 done by the end of the weekend. They will be having the green helmets though, the Vet Serg gets the yellow!

I wasn't too sure about the actual colours the Raptors might use to signify the higher rank, but I went with yellow because I like the contrast.

I'll do some digging about the colours, it might actually be white?

It's cool, they're your marines so you should paint them how you want! The yellow looks great, you did an awesome job on what is considered one of the harder colors to paint. Plus, like I said, Raptors are pretty flexible with stuff like that. It's part of makes them cool.

According to Codex-adherent chapters, white helmets are for 1st Company veterans (sternguard, vanguard, terminators, etc.) while veteran sergeants wear red helmets with a white stripe... but like I said, Raptors are flexible with most of what they do so you can really make it however you like. They are technically a Codex-adherent chapter, but they aren't hardcore about it like a lot of the popular chapters.

Here is some reading on them:
Lexicanum - Raptors (Chapter) (The Lexicanum is a wiki that only has official information from GW/Forge World/Black Library)
Warhammer 40K Wiki - Raptors (Another wiki similar to the Lexicanum but has lots of unofficial fan-submitted information/artwork; cool stuff but take it with a grain of salt)
Imperial Armour, Volume III: The Taros Campaign (from Forge World, expensive but pretty cool; the Raptors were heavily involved in the Taros Campaign)

Dammit. People come into "new player" WIP threads to feel superior looking at poorly painted newbish models.

This thread severely disappoints!

Great start, Dude! I painted some Raptors on commission at some point in the past and enjoyed them.

Thank you.

I figured I would post this as I really want to improve on my painting skills. I only have a couple of guys around where I live so being able to post online, ask for comments and criticism is really only going to be the only way I can improve.

Again, this is my first model.. so I expect many duffed up models to come.

I'll keep you guys posted on my army progress! It may be slow (lack of painting time) but surely it should come together.

Thanks.

Not to toot my horn, but here's a link to my Photobucket with the Raptorts I painted way back when.

Lies! That guy is super good, dude!

If that really is your first miniature ever, I take it you've got a background in art? That is higher quality stuff than people I know who've been at this for years.

I wouldn't worry much about "muffing" future projects. The thing about doing this stuff is you only get better the more you do. Can't wait to see the quality of stuff you're able to put out in a year, dude. Awesome work.

I've painted many models, and I look like I paint at a grade school level compared to your skills on your very first model. I'm jealous, you must have a background in art or just a natural talent for it.

Excellent work.

Hey guys, as promised here is an update. Heh.

Just finished off the first member of the squad - tactical with bolter!

Lemme know what you think!

Took me about 45 minutes from start to finish. I should be able to finish the lot this week. Looking forward to painting this big plasma weapon!
