I'm still new to this and have so far, only played casual games with my friend (We have the DV boxset).

So, this a list that I feel like would be able to handle the majority of armies... But I could be very wrong and that's where you guys come in. What do you think about this army? What are its strengths, weaknesses and what changes could I make?

What unit would the Warpsmith join? Even 2+/4+ T5, if he's on his own and your Warlord he'll get picked on.

Lascannons and Rhino's are at cross-purposes, one wants to stay still and the other wants to move. Obviously this makes the unit more versatile but at the expense of efficiency. You've also not taken a special weapon, which I'd definetly recommend (heavy weapon is optional IMHO).

I presume you've compared the CSM squads (MoN, Icon & VotLW) Vs Plague Marines, though that would mean taking a lord to make them troops.

The Dakkafiends are only BS3, so will miss half the time, but are mobile S8 platforms that can feasably threaten flyers, presumably the idea is that the Warpsmith hangs around these?

I see your point about the rhino Lascannon.

The idea with the rhino/Lascannon is that they drove to objectives, dropped off the marines. The marines hold the objective while the rhinos either hang around giving cover (can rhinos act as LoS blockers?) or try to distract the enemy, wasting their shots.

The warpsmith was going to hang back and make repairs, while the cultists distract anything that comes near the forgefiends for a turn or two.

Rhinos can certainly act as LoS blockers, it's a useful tactic - remember that (not including the turn they disembark) you can Flat Out the Rhino infront of the unit in the shooting phase after the marines have shot to block reprisals.

Another trouble with Lascannons in normal squads is that if you're shooting tanks the bolters are wasted. As I said it's not a terrible plan, each of your units can tackle a variety of targets, with multiple redundancies in the form of copy-paste.

Wow, that's significantly different. I hope I haven't dissuaded you from a more unique army? I was only really trying to get you to giggle round some weapon options

The second list would certainly be considered more competitive than the first (although if you drop two plague marines, you can add 3 more plasma guns (+1 to each squad of plaguies) and upgrade a havoc from auto to lascannon).

It was just an idea I was throwing out. Though, the more and more I look over the second list, the less I like it. It feels so... Generic. I think I'll just stick to altering the first list. It looks like something I would enjoy playing and that's all that matters, right?

the second list is vastly superior.

Since I don't want to make a new topic, I'll just post this here.
After reading up on the Iron Warriors, I have fallen in love with them, as I'm a big fan of siege warfare. Since I still know little about them, I was wondering what would be a decent, yet still fluffy list?

Haha, glad you asked! My brother based his whole CSM army on iron warriors (though he doesn't like spam armies) but this is a list that fits the theme and gives you great fighting power.

Hq-warp smith (no upgrades)
Hq--warp smith as above

Troops-10 marines with lascannon
Troops-10 marines with lascannon
Troops-10 marines with lascannon
Troops-10 cultists with nothing (warp smiths go here)

Fast- as many heldrakes as you can afford (this makes it more competitive)

Heavy- 3 forge fiends with hades auto cannons

I don't have codex with me atm, but this should be around 1850pts depending on how many drakes you have, also I recommend an agies defense line with or without quad gun,
But you camp on objectives, which you place as close together in your deployment zone, and then all lascannons shoot at a tank that can't be hurt by the autocannons, and from there its simple. Also the warp smiths in the cultist squad can repair 2 different forge fiends in the same turn (just make sure they are close enough).

Hope this helps!

Ps. Some people like vindicators but i'm not a huge fan mostly because of 24" range.

I do like that list and it would seem that my original list is quite similar. Though, I will mostly be playing casual games and I don't really like the idea of bringing more than 2 Helldrakes. anything I could substitute? Raptors (if iron Warriors used them), more cultists?

I'm not sold on Daemonic Possession for the Preds (reduced to BS3) but other than that, I like that list!

oh, I thought that predators were BS3. Well if that's the case, drop daemonic possession and give them havoc launchers?

Well, if you want to be fluffy, I'd say vindicators really fit the iron warriors bill. Perhaps replace the predators in your list with vindicators if you want to go down that road.

Hmmm... If I take Vindicators, that would mean the ADL will be somewhat wasted. Though, if I drop the ADL, I could add more cultists for the Warpsmith.

More cultists and Vindicators would a lot more fluffy.

Decisions, decisions.

One suggestion, for those army lists I would use spoilers. Really unappealing to scroll through all this text just to quick reply If you don't know how it is just

For example:
Spoiler:

Hey

In terms of your list, it would help to know what your planned tactics are, and what your opponent is playing. And if you know, what he might be running or what his tactics may be.

Happy Wargaming!

It's all in the rolls.

For starters, my tactics (which are stated in my last list I posted) is to camp on objectives and hit the enemy with long range weapons. As for my opponent, he will mostly be playing a mixture of Dark angels and tau. I have no idea what his list might end up being as he seems to be winging it and buying models that he needs/wants at that point in time.

Thanks for info, I'm still learning the ropes of this site.
