Subject: 10 honour guard or 5 Assault Centurions?

I'm planning on body guarding my Chapter master with either 10 honour guard (with chapter banner) or 5 Assault Centurions (with hurricane bolters instead for 30 twin-linked bolter rounds before the charge + TL- flamers/meltaguns)
I'm sticking these in a Land Raider, A Redeemer for honour guard (transports 12) or the Crusader for the Centurions (tranport capacity 16).
I made a long ass post about it on my blog:
http://warhammermajq.blogspot.se/2014/02/honour-guard-or-assault-centurions.html
the math is very roughly estimated there.
What are your guys opinion? I should (perhaps?) mention I play as Iron hands.

I use a chapter master as a bodyguard for my marines, not the other way around. I would say use the honor guard because they are cheaper.

They are about 25 pts cheaper in these configurations, so it's not a huge win.

I would resoundingly vote honor guard with swords, relic blades, and the banner. Yes the centurions are a bit more survivable but that's the point of the crusader. Both units are screwed it caught in the open. At only 15 attacks on the charge at ws 4 centurions are just too easy to tarpit. Just about any army could outmaneuver them or just feed them units to keep them busy. I've been running 8 honor guard with 3 relic blades and a banner. They are accompanied by asterion moloc and they absolutely eat things.

Yeah leaning towards honour guard now for the sheer number of ap3 attacks. Might test it with some power axes in the unit.

5 assault cents would put out 16 WS4 str9 ap2 init.4 attacks out, and the chapter master would put out 5/6 attacks based on config. at either str7 or 8.
I dont think much could survive that. On almost anything it averages out 11/13 ap2 wounds.
And thats after the shooting. 30 twin linked bolter rounds and either 5 twinlinked flamers or melta shots.
You wont be charging them at gaunts or boys since they are assaulting out of a LR.

16 attacks seems great on paper but only 8 will hit. 6-7 will wound. Not exactly impressive. With so few attacks it would take ages to chew through a guard blob or a large group of boys. A land raider will help as will the chapter master. But why not just take a unit that doesn't need a beefcake HQ make it appear decent? A unit of honor guard or assault terminators are more survivable and will put out much more damage. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also I don't think axes are really worth it on them. If you actually find yourself in combat with 2+ weight of attacks will be better than ap2. A dash of relic blades will be pretty darn good though.

once again......hordes are not a problem.
You already killed 20+ guardsmen/orks from shooting before you even charged in.
so now you charge and kill another 11/13 guys. Thats an entire squad or orks/gaunt in one round. And thats only 19 guardsmen swinging back at you doing nothing.

If you killed 20 guardsmen you have a fantastic chance to fail your charge range. IMO it's much better to have a unit that can dish out the pain in CC if it is a CC unit. Yes, the LR can help shuttle these guys but they can be downed too. If these guys are caught without a ride you just wasted a crapton of points on bolter sporting terminator wannabees. I'd love to find a good use for them but they are just plain bad when compared to the other options the codex offers. The only advantage they have over honor guard is that they have T5 (which will be ignored by ap2 weapons) 2W and initiative 4 powerfists. The disadvantages are just too numerous to list. It just boils down to this: If you want a unit that will dish out an obscene amount of power weapon attacks and still look cool with a 2+ save take honor guard. If you want an assault unit that is has amazing resilience and can wound just about anything take terminators. If you want to waste points on a terribad unit that has super cool models take assault centurions. I'm not trying to be rude and I'm sorry if I come off that way. But these guys are just plain bad at what they do. I mean they even come equipped with template weapons that they cant fire over watch with.
