Hey there everyone, been playing wargames since the 7th grade with my first being 40K. I got out of it in 2010 for a few different reasons and switched to Warmachine. Now I'm in college and after seing some of my neighbor's amazing Riptide suits I am really itching to get back into Warhammer 40K. While I like to think I had extensive knowledge of 4th and 5th ed I have no idea what's going on now in 40K. Apparently flyers are a big deal now and 'standard' games got increased in points value?
Anyhow I'm very excited to start posting my models as they are completed and get your opinions on various lists. I know I'm doing vanilla marines but as of right now torn between Salamanders or Imperial Fists

Welcome to Dakka!
As for the army itself, if you're still torn, try looking up some background information on them. I used to play Ultramarines but switched to Salamanders when I saw the Salamanders' background.

Pick whatever army you feel the most attracted to. I presonally should go Salamanders, especially now Kromlech released some new-and-shiny-ultra-cool-not-shoulder pads!
Welcome to Dakka, by the way!

Welcome to Dakka! I'm building a preheresy army and a warmachine army side by side. Hopefully our boys can cross swords some day.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes. I did some fluff comparison and ended up choosing the Salamanders in the end. Now I'm working on an 1850 list so I know what i wanna pick up over time.
Quick question though. My original list had everyone in droppods but a friend of mine said tat the rules no longer allow that. Just how much of my army can I have in reserve?

Drop pods are still a thing. The rules for reserves have changed in 6th. I think 1/2 your force can be reserved, but there's an exception for drop pods.

I believe that is correct. Because units embarked in pods have to start in reserves they get a pass when you have to figure out how much of your army can be withheld.
