The views are counted in three places at once, one in real time (20), one in a queue to update the database (20) and one in the database (14). Every little while they are synchronised and the value from the database can sometimes be shown before the ones in the queue to update the database are processed. This means the shown view count can drop down, but they will go back up to the correct figure upon the next synchronisation unless the site is restarted in the meantime, resetting the queue.
Even more confused now I hope

On the topic, do crawlers inflate thread view counts? Google and the like?
On a more not-serious note, if I wget threads 10000 times, will those show up as individual views?
Bots do increase view counts. Wgetting x thousand times would show up as views, but would also hit the IDS so you'd quite likely get banned or blocked forever either automatically or in response to the traffic pattern. If there was deliberate abuse, we can always delete threads or change the view counts so it has never been a problem yet. The view counts are not used in any automated thread quality algorithms (front page promos, etc) because they are unreliable and gameable numbers.
