I was offered a trade recently, but I've kind of been debating whether or not to go ahead with it. The thing is, I'm not entirely sure that the deal is at all in my favor, based on what others have told me about pricing things. I'd hoped to get a second opinion from my fellow Dakkanauts who might have more experience with this kind of thing.

The trade I was offered was my 9 Death Company models (all assembled, one model painted), my Librarian (assembled and primed), and my Gabriel Seth model (assembled) in exchange for one assembled and primed Devilfish, which apparently hasn't even seen the battlefield yet. For reference, I'm offering $25 for the DC and $10 apiece for the HQs. It's my understanding that most things are at the very least valued at 50% off, but the model in question is also (apparently) new and basically at the perfect stage before being painted.

Am I getting ripped off here?

Easy answer.

Go to GW website and price out the models and see.

However, money really isn't an issue if you absolutely have no need for the BA models and you really could use a new D-fish. Models aren't worth anything if they never leave the shelf.

Honestly it depends on how badly you want to item in question and the condition of it. Honestly I would value a primed devilfish at around $20.00-$30.00 as a NIB (before tex) is $37,25.

Brand new prices. When buying when everything is used/open box/assembled, you just compare the retail prices.

Librarian: 16-30, depending on which one you got
Seth: 19.25
9 Death Company: 59.40
--------
Call it $95-108 American

Devilfish: 37.25

So.....you are being ripped off by ~$60-70. I mean, you should easily be able to flip the Blood Angels stuff for $50, which is more than the devilfish brand new.

Based on the condition you've listed, your retail values should be pretty close to even. Your models alone are getting close to the $70-75 range retail, and I'm pretty sure a devilish is..what, $50ish? If so, yeah, it's unfair to you. Check the GW site for more accurate pricing, and Seth has a higher value if he's metal than if he's FC. Taking 50% off your value means the same for him: his value should also be taken off 50% if yours is in this case. That said, he might be amicable to sweetening the deal. But definitely check GW prices before agreeing!

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Not at all in your favour. Maybe he'd throw in a few fire warriors too?

Wow, lots of responses, and really quick, too. I'm glad to see that my fears weren't unfounded. Thanks to everyone who responded, it's been a great help. I've sent a message to the guy who made the offer and asked if he'd be willing to sweeten the deal, so to speak, so I'll see have to wait and see what happens next.

As others have pointed out there are two approaches.

The first is to compare the new price for your stuff and his.

The second, and likely more important one, is to compare actual value. In other words, if your DC is not being used and you have no intention of using them in the near future then they have a "value to you" which is hovering somewhere around $0.00. If the Devilfish is a model you will actually use and need then it has a "value" that is around what you could buy one for. For kicks, we'll call it the normal retail price.

So, if you trade something that is worth $0 to you for something that's worth $37 then you win.

However, if you are trading something that is worth $100 to you for something that's worth $37 then you don't win.

Simple as that.

total rip off. your death company alone is worth as much as a devilfish. A box of 5 sells for $33.00...so 9 of them are worth more than that devilfish.

I would tell the guy to pound sand

Yes, definitely.

But, we do live in a world where this trade isn't the only possibility. The best course of action here is to try and sell your worthless stuff for near retail value, and then use that money to buy tau stuff from someone whose actual value of their tau stuff is $0. Of course, you could do this directly if you found someone who had a tau army they didn't want, but also wanted DC, but that seems unlikely.

Especially if they're in the condition claimed, the DC will probably fetch a decent amount, and then it's just a matter of waiting and watching eBay for a desperate tau player looking to offload. You can get some stupid good deals on eBay if you're willing to be very, very patient...

Is it a metal Seth? I'm just curious, because that would make Seth alone worth quite a bit more I think.
