I'm an admitted Malifaux newbie, so maybe the answer is obvious but...

Where is the best place to see pictures of actual plastic miniatures, and not renders?

I've looked on all the main online stores, and even the Wyrd store pages - renders only seem to be all I can find.

I'm interested in the game, but really want to see the actual plastics first...

Thanks!

If you know exactly what you want to see, google is your friend.

But if you want to surf, the best I find is the Wyrd forum under the miniatures gallery. You can see a lot of different models painted up in different styles and to different levels.

Is there some reason why the official site only show renders?

Dunno... think Wyrd got tired of people complaining about studio paint jobs during the 3rd book (it got kind of out of control in my opinion), so they went all digital. It's pretty rare that studios show unpainted minis these days, unless they're really small, but Wyrd doesn't have studio painters any more.

If you're worried about material, from personal experience, they're great casts and the material cleans well and keeps detail well- my only complaint is some of their earlier stuff occasionally has inconvenient points where stuff joins and you need to cover it up (for instance, the Beckoner with no straps has one join on each shoulder and one splitting her neck in half around the collar bone, which was a pain to cover). It's because they're kind of anal about retaining all the detail, so they break pieces up rather than changing the form for slight overlaps. I find it a pain to build but looks good in the end.

I've only taken a couple of pictures of my Malifaux figures.

You'd need to use google or possibly check the Dakka gallery for what people have done.

Check out this dude's blog. He does an awesome box opening article on every plastic kit he gets, including any issues he has had with the individual minis so you can watch out for them. He has personally saved me from massive headaches for the three plastic crews I've had to put together.

Thanks for that link - good stuff in there!

I've been thinking about starting Malifaux for a while, but I'm still on the fence...

The miniatures are very nice, but I'm not sure I'd like the game, mechanics, etc.

Then there's the age old problem of having no one to play this with locally - and I've already got that area covered with Infinity, WWX, Darklands, etc...

Yeah I know the feeling about local players. I couldn't play minis games for 2 years due to no players where I used to live.

However if you have a local shop that you go to that has tables trust me when I say that if you play a game there often enough you will generate interest in it and get consistent players in time. When I moved to where I am now 1 year ago there was one consistent player for Warmachine. I played him once a week at most and eventually we got up to 6 consistent players at present, with 4 new starting now. Having 6 consistent players drastically changes how often you can play as well as creates even more interest in the game and it kinda snowballs from there. You just have to be willing to teach others and nurture their interest and enthusiasm in the game, but most importantly be consistent on when you play. If people know that you're always there at a certain time then they lose the hesitation of starting a new game with no one to play.

Now I'm finally getting Malifaux interest and soon I will have consistent Malifaux players. The great thing about getting people started in this game is that the barrier of entry is extremely inviting. Once you tell people that all they have to do to get into the game is spend $40 on average for a crew and $15 for the small rulebook and they can play 35SS games easily, rather than the huge amount needed for tournament points equivalent games for Warhammer or the slightly less for Warmachine/Hordes.

HA - plenty!

Is there a good place to go to get a basic rundown of the game, the mechanics, and maybe a quick batrep too?

The new players lounge on the Wyrd forums is always good to post questions (or just peruse other people's questions): http://wyrd-games.net/community/forum/165-new-players-lounge/

This is my favorite blog for batreps (don't mind the pink - it is good): http://rathnard.blogspot.com.au/

Another great one is here (he walks through starting a crew): http://joelfaux.blogspot.com/

And in the name of shameless plugs, my blog (which isn't great for beginners but, you know, shameless plugs!): http://justindrawingdead.com/

Unfortunately with the edition change there's not as many resources. Still getting the wiki converted.

Thank you for all of those links - I'll definitely be checking them all out!

Many of the miniatures in this line are really quite amazing - it is hard to resist...

The whole 1E vs. 2E thing is a bit daunting though, I'll admit.

It's an edition change. Since you're here I'm sure you're familiar enough with miniature game edition changes.

Make sure you have the M2E book and pick up an Arsenal Deck for the faction of your choice and you're set. If the stat cards that come with your models fold in half, they're the older ones so look to the arsenal deck.

Not every card has been released in an Arsenal Deck yet, but those that haven't are available for free download here: http://wyrd-games.net/community/files/file/54-malifaux-wave-2-cards-high-rez/

Any questions, let me know.

Something to note, some of the new boxed starters are coming with new models that weren't in the old sets and probably won't see individual release (specifically, each master has a totem that's associated with them: some didn't used to).

There are also a few models from the first wave that have gotten different base sizes (IIRC the whole list is Hamelin (original was on a larger base), the Ice Golem (now on a larger base), the Poltergeist (also larger now).

There are a few more limited cross-faction options now, but that won't affect you unless you're reading 1st edition wikis.

Regarding decks, the only issue is if you get cross faction pieces (most notably with Ten Thunders)- the cards are only in their primary faction (where they're listed in the rulebook).

I think those are all the possible pitfalls, which I know sounds like quite a bit, but it's worth it.
