So the other night a new person came to the club. He said he hadnt played in years. He opened his case to reveal a really nicely painted (but very very old school) space marine army. The guns where all bright pinkish red, the bases where a simple green with some texture, lots of bright peices and so on.

The closest I can find is this

https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=old+space+marines&client=firefox-a&hs=SW1&rls=org.mozilla:en-GBfficial&channel=fflb&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=NyT4UsDDO86MkwXHloDIDA&ved=0CCkQsAQ&biw=1600&bih=770#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=5-Kny0wUduJ73M%253A%3BGtMSAE08qxjv9M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252F2.bp.blogspot.com%252F-B2vY0sFX5U8%252FTv7alEKFMnI%252FAAAAAAAAA9M%252F7XN7WSHyc5o%252Fs1600%252Fgd2012-001.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fsepulchreofheroes.blogspot.com%252F2011%252F12%252F6th-edition-codex-space-marines-what-id.html%3B600%3B414

Now I was facing a more modern Space Marine army and the colour styles people do are vastly different. I also looked at Golden Demon winners from the 90s and wow just well different.

Has anybody pondered about the future of painting models?

I guess Airbrushing is already changing how alot of people paint but more the style changes. We no longer see bright colours on the feild very often (although my praetorians know nothing of stealth...) but instead dark shadowey colours and so on.

Times are changing, one day my army will look out of place amongst the younger gamers and teres will look more modern (whatever that look may be in 20+ years) and well its funny to imagine really.

One change I noticed is the move away from dry brushing, all the old guys dry brush a lot that I know of, but nobody my age does, its all highlighting and washing etc.

Anybody else think about this? Any Predictions for the future of minis and how they get presented in comparrisson today? Any past trends that can hint us towards future changes?

I've seen everything. Some people like a more subdued look. Others like it loud and proud. I myself have always painted in move vibrant colors mostly because I want the people two tables over to see my army. I've seen a lot of IG armies that seem to dissapear on an urban tabletop. If this is what the owner wanted then great. I myself don't care for that look.

I still use every technique I've ever learned and still advocate the use of them all. There are things you can do with drybrushing that you just cant do with blending or highlighting. It just depends on what your overall feel will look like, Think of it the difference between cell shading and real time lighting in animated movies. IMO one doesn't look better than the other because I can appreciate the style of each.

I've gotten a lot of complements on my Space Wolves army because they look old school, but are still a little more subdued.

i agree, Im a man of bright look at me colours as well.

The kids thought they where ugly but my eyes widened at the site of them. Its what got me thinking.

They both look good but you do have a point about the look on the battlefeild. I guess the trend is moving to a more practical look where your models look the part rather than the king authors knights look.

Mike McVey (sp?) was a fan of white undercoat and bright colors that popped (or that's the style he preached). Everything was more cartoony and friendly in general.

I'm kinda hoping for holographic game pieces, mainly because I hate painting models so much.

But then I figure it pretty much turns into a video game.

But then I'm like, "Wait, I LIKE video games. More than I like tabletop games."

maybe, and im just throwing it out there, the new style of painting is the way it is because painting bright reds and oranges etc is harder than dark blues and greys?

I'm thinking that gw is moving 40K more and more into grimdark now vs 20 years ago. So they bring darker colors now

The painting styles have changed a lot over the years. I miss the bright colours from 2ed. They started to fade out during 3rd and now everything is as grimdark as can be.

My tabletop is traditional green grass so most of my models are on Goblin Green bases with simple flock.

Thankfully things have changed because I couldn't face painting yellow and black warning stripes over every power fist!
