I'm trying to think of all the armies that can pop an AE ward. Via item, spell, unit, whatever. The point being, you could use them to protect monsters and even monsters+riders. Such as:

-Empire Luminark + Steam Tank. Only a 6+ save, but still.
-Ogre Trollguts AE + Thundertusk/Stonehorn. Though 20+ cast...
-VC Mortis Engine + Terrorgheist

I know there's a bunch out there.

I have managed to cast an AE Trollguts a couple of times. Kept my ironguts and thundertusk alive much longer than it should have.

The Stunties have (had) an AE ward banner against shooting/magic missiles
The Brets have a kind-of AE with the blessing (but Griffin are good compared to Hypogriffs !)
Everybody with Light Magic has access to Pha's protection

But I mean everything. So you can shove monsters in it.

A stonehorn with regen isn't worth shooting at with a non-flaming cannon.

The new Dwarves book has the Master Rune of Grungni in the banner section. It grants a 5++ save vs missile weapon attacks and magic missiles to all units within 6".

Heh I remember back in the old vampire counts army book where you could take the regen. banner. Throw that on some grave guard with the +1 to hit banner for grave guard and throw a helm of commandment on a vampire in a unit behind them and bam you get killy insane unit. Not sure if fencer's blades made this load-out even stupider.
