If I take a space marine dreadnaught with, say, and autocannon and assault cannon.... he doesnt have a specified melee weapon so does he get a standard dreadnaught close combat weapon or does he have a normal close combat weapon... or nothing for close combat?

He attacks with his base strength and using his base attacks; so, for a Dreadnought, he would be S6 AP- with 2 attacks.

Unless there is an Advanced Rule in play, one follows the instructions to the letter within the default Rules. No permission exists to to make changes, well outside of everyone agreeing to House Rules, do what the default rules state, even if those changes are based on logical assumptions. In this case one would be required to produce a Rule that grants the Dreadnaught permission to use a different profile then the one stated in the 'no specified close combat weapon' rule, or else follow the default.
