I was looking through the codex and trying to work up something to use a single drop pod that I have had for about two years and has never seen the table. With kitted Sternguards running close to 300 points for a unit of 10 (and i dont have any modeled atm) I was looking for something a little less point wise and I was thinking about using a 10 man devastator squad with 4 multi-meltas. I've used a similar setup with long fangs in a drop pod with logan grimnar (for relentless / preferred) just not a maxed out sized squad.

Devastator Squad (Sergeant with Bolter & Melta Bombs, 9 Space Marines, 4 Multi-Meltas, Drop Pod) - 220

I have been playing a majority bike army recently and I think the podding MMs could work well with it - anyone else's thoughts on the setup or has anyone else used similar before?

The problem there is that the MM will be snapfiring when they jum out of the pod. Much better taking command squad with meltagun oreven an assault squad with 2 meltagun and a combimelta (if that is possible, i dont hav my codex with me )

It seesm like it wouldn't be too bad but Sternguard just seem so much better.

sternguard are worth the extra 80 points just simply because they wont be snapfiring and you can give all ten combi meltas, but you really only need a squad of five seeing as they will be a one hit wonder anyway.

Doesn't the Ultramarine chapter tactic give Devastators Relentless for a turn? could be an option.

I know you are specifically asking about a drop pod but this unit would work with loth and a rhino. Loth gives them relentless with biomancy. Blow up the rhino and they still have the equivalent of 30" ap1 krak missiles (move 6", out of melta range) for cheaper than mls cost.
