Hey all, here's my defiler-turned-soul-grinder conversion. I've always liked the defiler kit, if not the actual model (the little waist and head look kinda dumb), and I really do not like the soul grinder kit one bit. I tried to make something a little more lumbering and crustacean looking, some sort of hunched and brainless war-beast.
Lemmi know what you think!

I think you absolutely 100% nailed it!
That is so much better than either the defiler or 'grinder and actually looks much more in keeping with the revamped modern daemons/CSM stuff. The paintjob is particularly good also, I tend not to like blood on weapons but that looks believable and works really well. Is it a PVA, glaze and gloss varnish mix?
I also like the fact on very close inspection I can just about make out all the donor parts and what kit they are from

My khorne critters are all plastered in bloody bases (a warp manifestation i guess?), and I started by mixing my own blood effects with red-ink, gloss medium, and some black and red paint, but I started dreading it. Its very messy, and hard to keep consistent across all models.
Along comes the GW blood for the blood god effect paint, and suddenly I don't have to mix the damn stuff myself anymore!

This makes me want to start a khorne army. Red isn't easy to work with but you pulled it off just fine!

Ok so I am a chief for Red Lobster And I most say that this is great! Very glad that I don't have to kill and cook these all day. Great work, love the paint and conversion. Post more of your work.

Just forgot what I was going to say.

Awesome!! I've always hated the defiler model because it always looked unbalanced. It looks like to different models badly kit-bashed. Your Def looks perfect.. Any way you could do a tutorial or gives us a bit list for this bad boy?

Sure thing, it was a pretty straightforward build.
-The leg chassis is mounted backwards, with the torso connection at the back. Makes the whole thing a little better balanced (very front heavy by default, with the claws and the torso up front)
-The spikey front claw armour are the weapon covers from the defiler kit, and the usual armour plate is used on the waist joint to bulk it out a bit.
-The head is obviously from the forgefiend kit, and is mounted to the chest battlecannon with some greenstuff (I sawed down the cannon a bit).
-The horns are from I think the WFB Ogre stonehorn kit, I got them from a bitz site. Had to cut them down by about half, because those things are biiiig. Theyre mounted to the head with some wire and greenstuff.
-The auto/harvester cannon is from the defiler kit, but I flipped the barrels and mounted it on a combi-bolter pintle so it could be stuck in the top.
-The big side-plug on the right-hand side is the turret mount from an aegis quad gun.

Yes. This is absolutely what the defiler should look like, as standard!

I could much easier imagine a 'helbrute' style flesh infused version of this for soul grinder too.

Nice red, good use of bits.. Are those tusks from the WHFB Mammoth Kit or from the LOTR kit?? Also I like the use of the Forge Fiend head on the front to act as the battle cannon but I can't help but think that the blood is a bit overdone (did it really need to be all over his legs??)

The horns are from the WFB Ogre Stonetusk big guy mammoth thingy.

As for the blood, my army is based in a "skullz n' blood for khorne' sort of theme. My guys bring their blood with them. Warp rift opens, and the ground in the area just erupts into a wetland of bones and gore. My dudes are literally sloshing, ankle deep through the stuff.
Same with my powerweapons. It's not that they have blood ON them, its that the blood of all their past victims is forever seeping out of their blades.
The blood is very purposefully overdone, because... KHORNE

Nice model and I understand where you're coming from now, a bit of context with regards to why models are painted in a specific manner initially would have helped a lot :3

Awesome skull throne monkeys. These models are well done, and Mr. Crabby Claws is suitably gory. Good stuff.

That Soul Grinder is EPIC, and that Daemon Prince is amazing. I recognize that plastic toy, and that's a fan-fething-tastic use of it. The wing placement is a little odd, but I understand it from a converting perspective, and it also looks appropriately weird and daemonic.

The Soul Grinder is just amazing. Really good execution of a great concept.
