I'm looking to add a small ally detachment of Orks to my Necron army. I'm interested in the 1500-1750 point range and about 500 of that to be Orks.
I was thinking a mob or two of boyz that could run up the field and distract my enemies while the 'crons get into the close-mid range that they excel in. The Orks could also stop assault units form chopping me to bits.

I chose Orks because I love the look and lore behind them and would like to eventually make them into a full force of their own.

so any suggestions for approx 500 points of Orks to add a bit of waaaagh to my soulless phalanx?

You want them to get up the board?

Hmm, I guess a warboss on a bike, for 140-ish

2 trukks of boyz with nobs/claw/pole for 106 each

gets you 352 pts... thats if you want fast boyz

Add in 10 lootas and that gets you a total of 502 pts of boyz

Thats if I didn't screw up my math somewhere in there (which is totally possible...but for now lets go with that)

That gets you a combination of units that you can easily get from a battleforce or two, and lootas are about as good as it gets atm....and seems to fit your needs.

Its a common misconception that Orks are good in close combat. Our shoota boyz are less rubbish at it than other shooty troops, but they will die horribly to actual close combat units. Think of Orks are more of a power klaw delivery system with regards to close combat

Take Ork allies for any of the following;
~reliable, resiliant scoring troops with some counter assault ability (30x Shoota Boyz)
~fast, durable power klaw delivery system (Nob Bikers, Bikerboss)
~in your face AV14 spam (up to 3 battlewagons in an allied detachment...)
~a source of insane quantities of S7 AP4 which will die to a stiff breeze (lootas)
~cheap and dirty barrage weapons with hurrdurr artillery durability (lobbas)
~Cover save bubble (KFF, which affects *all* units with a model within 6")

Forgeworld also unlocks the Grot Bomm Launcha, a 35pt, one shot twin linked large barrage weapon for sniping Manticores and other such nastiness

Since you should already have all the anti-tank you need...

20 ard boyz
30 shootz boyz

1 warboss in mega armor

give nobs if you want, but don't bother with klaws, the nob is there for challenges give him a big choppa so he could potentially hit first.

Throw warboss in ard boyz, charge the threats. use the shootas to mass fire on anything, then charge it.

Never understimate the power of dice buckets, they may suck in CC after the first round, but they should still wound moderately well.

as for the shootas...nothing is as satisfying as wiping out an entire squad of terminators in overwatch, but make sure you charge them first.
