Okay, so is there any possible way that Commissar Yarrick could be a competitive choice for a hq choice, as an allied detachment to or with allies like Sisters of Battle or Blood Angels? Any way at all? Would really love to field him, but at the moment, I've no idea how to. Repentia maybe? Any ideas welcome. Thanks

He isnt really ever going to be competitive so long as hes extremely expensive. As inquisitors or other marines characters do the best thing for yarrik is a blob and lots of infantry. You want to make use of all of his abilities to get every pooint you paid for him. So read through everything he does and ask yourself what units would benefit from him most.

Pretty standard would be a 30-50 man blob. I usually prefer 40 for him but I will usually run 30 for my inquisitors. Then you want to give power axes and melta bombs on all the sergeants. Then depending on if you are moving up or sitting still add heavy weapons, either autocannons or lascannons. Then if you want special weapons. If moving forward add special weapons. If staying still add heavy weapons and then maybe special if you have the points.

From that point add another platoon into the list for more infantry and then whatever else your list needs to take on most any opponents.

Prettttttttttttttttty much. He's obscenely overpriced and more of an assault character in a shooty-heavy army.

Do this instead, buy a baneblade, call it the fortress of arrogance, then make a little platform (aka Pulpit) on top with some speakers and put Yarrick on it. You can now have yarrick "in" your army the way he should be, by having him murder everything in sight with cannons while he shouts about it

6,000 points (Order of Our Martyred Lady)

Hahahahah the fortress of arrogance would be nice. Ive just used yarrick a couple of times and Ive never really been happy with him. Just too expensive. I would much rather have a decked out commissar lord than him.

As has been said, he's an assaulty character in a shooty army. If running a gunline list you could have him lead a counter attacking unit. Take a midsized platoon, say 40-50 dudes, load it up with as many power weapons as possible (ideally swords, as giardsmen aren't tough enough to let the other guy swing first) and keep it out of the way (either in reserve, in a building, staggared behind a primary unit, etc) and usr that unit to either kill deepstrikers, protect tanks/arty, or use it to support a parent unit/platoon that is bigger, with a commisar so its nearly impossible to break in a single assault phase. Then have Yarricks CC platoon charge the enemy platoon locked in combat.

Inquisitor with nades will be cheaper and way more useful for a blob.

I like to run him in a Stormlord full of Ogryns.
Expensive in every sense but great fun in an Apocalypse game and generally quite hard to deal with.
But yeah, he's just too expensive points wise to ever be truly competitive.

You can make a very fun unit from Yarrick, Azrael, Coteaz, and a inquisitor w/rad grenades, hammerhand, book and a unit of ~9 or so ogryn. The unit is T5 and the opponent has to reroll successful to wound rolls due to yarrick. Yarrick can lead the unit and LoS S9- wounds to the ogryn and tank the S10 wounds. Rotate the ogryn out when the take wounds and everyone in the unit has a 4+ invulnerable save. The unit can either assault something together and decimate it (S7 ogryn with -1 T will ID SM characters and Azzy and Yarrick can take anything tougher) or they can break up before the charge to assault up to 5 weak units. The unit can even scout.

Unfortunately the units price tag is huge and it is slow so it will never be a tournament winner. It is however very fun and can be pretty good if used correctly.
