Newbie Necron player here,
The codex says Crypteks and Lords can be taken in a Royal Court and don't have their stats and wargear anywhere else but in the Royal Court section. Is it possible to take them by themselves? I really just want a Lord for the Res Orb and don't really want to pay the extra for the Overlord. I know I'll soon want an Overlord for larger games, but I'm going to be playing smaller games for a while due to budget constraints.

No. You need an overlord to unlock the court. Once you have it unlocked you can buy a single model for it, but not before.

I'm not so sure on that. I think you can take an overlord or cryptek by themselves as an HQ choice. That's why there's special characters that are also crypteks that are HQ choices.

If you take an overlord there is a modifier that you can take up to 5 crypteks and 5 lords without them counting towards your HQ. But only if you have an overlord

Nope. The poster who indicated you have to take the Overlord first is correct, you cannot take any Crypteks or Lords otherwise. (and only one royal court per Overlord you have)

Also remember that several of the named characters are overlords and allow you to take a royal court. They are listed at the top of the royal court section (p90)

Illuminor Sveras is a named Cryptek that does take up a HQ slot and does not require you to take an Overlord.

@OP If you are playing games that already bypasses the FOC ie no HQ and 2 Troops as mandatory to keep the points low, talk to your opponent about letting you include a Royal Court. The Royal Court restriction is based for games that follow FOC. With friendly games you can do what you (and your opponent) want.

One tip if youre on a low budget, get the command/annihilation barge set.
