Hi all. Im new to dakka and wanted to get some input. I run IG and am having a hard time winning matches. The best way to run a tank-based IG army is to use the armored battlegroup rules from IA1. That will give you troops + HQ LRBTs (and variants) with awesome special rules and, more importantly, the ability to split up your tanks instead of taking ineffective squadrons. That kind of wall of AV 14 is going to be hard to deal with as long as you use some sense and don't run straight into melta range. If you want any more detailed advice you'll have to post your army list and some more information on what you're dying to.

I mostly fight space marines (wolves and GK) and nids. my usual list is as follows
CCS with medpak and chimera
2x vets with flak armor or demolitions and chimeras
3 vendettas for flying/lascannon power
3 tanks usually punisher, executioner, and battle tank all with sponses of bolters or plasma
any leftover points go towards buffing troops or if enough points left a regular squad for cover
im not familiar with IA1. What is that in? is it a downloadable packet?

First of all, I'm assuming you have 3x melta or plasma on each vet squad and just haven't bothered to list all of your heavy/special weapons. You do, right? If not, this is a big problem. Vets exist to carry melta/plasma, taking them without guns is just throwing away points.
Medpack is a waste of a lot of points and a melta/plasma gun carrier. Take proper guns (4x melta/plasma) instead of a FNP "save" that they often don't get to take at all.
3 vendettas for flying/lascannon power
These are obviously good. Consider taking another vet squad or moving some of your Chimera troops here so that you can drop a late-game scoring unit on an objective.

Bad choice of tanks. Sponsons on the LRBT are a waste because of the ordnance main gun ( HB on the punisher and plasma on the executioner are great though) and you don't have any consistency with your tanks. Instead of picking three different random tanks you probably want to pick a single type and take three copies of it. This gives you much better redundancy since your opponent can't just kill the single tank they're most afraid of.

Gonna go right ahead and agree with Peregrine here. Drop the medic, take plasma/melta, and definitely change out the base Russ.
In all fairness, he can probably get away with two of one tank and a single tank of the other.
Is IA worth it if he's only running three LRBTs and no other heavy support?

I've been playing IG for about a year now. If you like to play tank heavy, then you need to look into IA1 2nd ed.

I will also agree with peregrin in that you really need to focus your tanks to at the very least a single range bracket. You have 3 tanks each of which is likely to be at different ranges from the enemy and therefore you cannot castle or protect them together.
If you are going to run 3 vendettas you really should think about a comms relay or astropath to help them get onto the board before turn 4.
CCS medpack and LRBT HBs are wasted points. You really need special weapons on the vets and CCS if you don't already.
IA2ed2 is a great addition for any IG player. It opens up so many new options that not having it is sad. You don't actually need it per se as you are only running 3 LRBT anyways but it could be nice when you expand.
If you want no special weapons on your chimera units you could take a platoon with 2x IS in chimera and the PCS with 4x flamer in a vendetta. This can be useful for getting more chimera into a low point list.
Also if you are sitting back with your chimeras having heavy weapons in the squads within them can be effective. I would recommend autocannons if you do as they are cheap enough and multishot so they are not entirely wasted if you move.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I'm never sure how to outfit IS.
As for the sponsons on the battle tank I thought that since it was a hvy vehicle ordinance didn't matter. I'll have to look at the rules again.
Is grav chute worth it? Seems like a high risk for vendettas?

The "heavy" rule only makes the vehicle count as stationary for determining how many weapons can fire at full BS. It has nothing to do with the ordnance rule, which still applies as normal. If you fire the LRBT's main gun (and you will fire it every turn if you can) all of the other weapons will be BS 1.

Grav chute can be worthwhile on plasma equiped vets/CCS who can afford to DS far from any mishap obstacles. It is very dangerous to do however so you need to have a compelling reason for it.

Running any tank or mech heavy list you want to stay out of assault and melta range. Those two things will kill any tanks easily. So use your mech portion as defensive units. Vets in chimeras are great defensive units. When the enemy gets close have the chimeras spring forward and let the vets make use of their special weapons.
If your opponent has pods, just try to have your chimeras surround the russes.
Also if you are using 3 vendettas I would suggest using a defense line with a coms relay or using an astropath because if those birds get delayed it could mean the difference in whether your russes live or die.
As others said use plasma and melta on those vets and CCS
