Hey guys,

I'm currently painting a Deff Dread and a Trukk and would like to add a lot of corroded metal surfaces. I think just drybrushing or dabbing on with a sponge of some rust colors should do the trick for me, but I'm unsure what color to use. I'm reluctant to get pigments or weathering powders so just for quick and dirty work: what colors do you use? I figured some brown with a red but I'm never happy with what I mix and if I keep just randomly mixing stuff my horde of cultists I use to get rid of excess paint will end up red-brown from head to toe.

Also, I recently asked about the most interesting terrain and surprisingly industrial ruins got the vote. For completely rusted surfaces - and I mean not just drybrush some spots but total rust coverage - what paint or technique would you suggest? I thought along the lines of old train tracks and suchlike. They are not rust-red but dark-brown mostly. Has anyone a good suggestion how to make that look happen?

Thanks in advance. The community here is really a boon to my skills. chaos undivided be praised...

If you use the previous GW range then: basecoat of scorched brown, then dark flesh & stipple with a bright orange.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Well, I wont get anything new on a sunday and I want the color applied over the metal so basecoating is not an option.

I've got Scorched Brown, Calthan Brown, Gothor Brown, Tausept Ochre, Mechrite Red, Gory Red and Blood Red.

Any Idea what combination gives the best rust effects?

The sword is base coated scorched brown (actually rhinox hide, but they're similar enough) heavily stippled Steel Legion Drab (Calthan Brown is again, v similar) then more targeted stippling with a bright orange (slayer, but any will do)

I threw on some Nikilakh Oxide, first time I've used it and I'm quite please, and lightly dry brushed the raised edges with lead belcher. (But the main blade edge is done with Vallejo liquid metal silver)

Same technique, but no Oxide and more heavy on the silver, especially on areas where there would be wear or movement.
