Hey all

After a long stint in the 40k universe, then dolling up showgirls for the malifaux reality quickly followed up by keeping company with some trollbloods from the hordes game set, I was looking at the concept of becoming a ship painter....

...I looked at the dreadfleet miniatures and decided I'd like to have a fleet of pirate ships to broadside my enemies and sail the tabletop with the breeze in my face (preferably not from my opponents gamer odour). However I understand that dreadfleet exploits more luck and chance than skill.

Can anyone advise me on a gaming system where I can possibly flood my opponent with side-on cannon fire, board his/her ship and possibly kit my ship out with bigger, badder guns every so often?

I'm willing to try play testing new rule sets from people, but ideally want a decent miniature set to start in case my fancy in the genre doesn't ignite; at least I can have a painting project and decent looking minis

Cheers

Uncharted Seas is the only ship-based game that comes to mind. It's a fantasy/pirate theme.

Oh - there's also Sails of Glory. It's Napoleanic ship combat. And I think the minis are pre-paints.

I'm sure there are other rule sets though.

Uncharted Seas is a possibility and it's a free download from Spartan Games.

You can also pick up cheap copies $3-$4 of the soft cover (so you and your mates can play) from Miniatures Market.

It's a shot in the dark, but there's always the Pieces of Eight ruleset I got to play with recently. It's less ship-combat than swashbuckling, but it was plenty of fun, and we had about 8-10 players running around a small Spanish town causing havoc.

One of the other options (and the best in my opinion) is the very out of print Man-O-War game by Games Workshop.

You can still pick models up off ebay but they can be expensive.

If your willing to take a more steam punk approach there is Dystopian Wars by Spartan Games, I believe there is a new rule bulk on the horizon but could be mistaken.

The old Trafalgar game comes to mind. There was also an old WizKids games with sucha theme.
