I have a full sprue left of various bits are these just extra pieces that are arent neccesarily needed or specific to the defiler?

That sounds about right. IT might be an upgrade sprue. Have a look at the instructions for ! symbols with bits on that sprue - those are your optional parts.

Also this should go in painting and modelling...

its the chaos tank accessory sprue. basically just extra bits you can use to personalize your model with.

As others said it's extra bits to customize your defiler. Most of it you won't use because it's a tank upgrade spur.

Funnily enough I had the same problem when assembling my soulgrinder, until I realised it uses the same sprue as the defiler.
