Hi guys

I am starting a SW army and have a question regarding JAWS.
If the line passes through a character can he still try to LOS it?
for instance if i get 3 broadsides and the buffmander under it (closest being the buffmander), can he try to LOS it or is it done totally one model at a time without any evasion method?)

I know it says you can target specific but it does not mention anything regarding LOS i think...

LOS! requires a wound. Does Jaws wound?

Wouldn't the commander be immune to JotWW since he's jet pack infantry and the power only affects "infantry"? They had to FAQ it to affect jetbikes and artillery since it technically didn't before that.

Jet pack infantry, are indeed infantry.

I thought jump pack infantry where immune to JotWW though? So I thought jet pack would be as well.

So by extension JotWW will also remove swooping monstrous creature from play even though they are flying.

No, FMC is a different unit type from MC.

Jump Pack Infantry is more properly Infantry (Jump Pack) because Jump/Jet pack are now (in 6th edition) sub-unit types.

If "flying monstrous creature" is different from "monstrous creature" then how is it that "jump infantry" is not different from "infantry"?

In all the 6th ed codexes unit types aren't listed as "infantry (jump pack)" like you say but are explicitly listed as "jump infantry". No commas, brackets, or anything in there.

Technically it didn't affect artillery at all until is was FAQ'ed. In the same line it was FAQ'ed to affect jetbikes specifically but not jump infantry or jet pack infantry.

Page 47 tells you that "Jump" and "Jet" are "not a classification in and of itself. Instead you'll find it occurs in addition to another -".

Nothing in page 49 says the same for FMC. And indeed, if they were a sub-category of MC they wouldn't need to repeat the list of Special Rules.

Also make a note that many places play JotWW to not affect Swooping fliers, but to still affect them if they are gliding/grounded.

Ah, that explains it.
Silly rules are silly.

That seems logical. Too bad it isn't RAW so I'll have a hard time getting some people to agree.

Odds are you will see JotWW changed when that codex comes up to 6th so that Jetpack and jump units are immune. (or something like they add to the roll needed.)

My crisis suits will savor that moment. Losing 4 would HQ units to a I check of 4+ is infuriating when they should just hover over the damn fissure.

Well if you're bringing in real life objections: what happens when something pushing air off the ground has the ground fall out from under them?

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

Pretty sure you'll find it doesn't exist once Space Wolves get updated.

Um... that's not how physics works. If something is able to hover due to thrusters it can do so at any altitude with the same ambient pressure and temperature.
Thrusters, jets, propellers, etc. all push against the air around them, not the ground or any other surface.

Cool, so hovercraft will float at the same level if they go over a cliff?

If you're pushing air off the ground like a hovercraft or other low altitude air vehicles then the ground actually does have an effect on the ability to keep in the air. The vehicle in question here won't fall all the way to the bottom of the rift, it would however experience a drop in altitude until it's systems compensate. Air offers less resistance than ground hence offering a lower force pushing back on the vehicle for a given volume of air pushed down.

That's like ... physics brought into like ... a fictional environment.

Now, we like big books. (And we cannot lie. You other readers can’t deny, a book flops open with an itty-bitty font, and a map that’s in your face, you get—sorry! Sorry!)

It takes a big man to admit when he is wrong .... I am not a big man.

I think the main problem with this is the transition from 5th to 6th. I never really paid much attention to JoTWW when I played as almost everything I had in my army either had JP or was a fast skimmer (Thunder Guppies) and all of that changed in 6th.

They can easily glide over the rift as it's a line with no dimension.

Jump Infantry is not immune to Jaws. The wording is pretty clear on page 47 "Jump Infantry would, for example, follow the rules for Jump units and Infantry."

So yeah, it affects Jump Infantry. Which sucks if you're a wraith player.

As for the power itself, the FAQ states that it can affect specific models in units (so yes you can snipe with it), and it only requires LoS to the 1st model hit, and it does affect stuff out of LoS, even behind impassible terrain.

i was thinking more jet pack but the point is more that ground effects exist.
