I have an Ultramarine Army and curious about Imperial Guard for Allies. In turn it could become my second Army. My understanding is that IG may be getting a new Codex next month.

If I aligned my SMs with IG, what kind of an Allies list should I take? Mech? Troop?

I tend to favor a troop SM army. I do have a few predators and heavy vehicles of theirs to throw in the mix but I like using a large groups of foot troops. Like my Stern guards and terminators.

I would go GK but I'd rather wait for their codex.

Take my ideas with pinches of salt but here:

As you have said you like footsloogers/normal troops the IG's tanks and other mechs will work out well for you

BA are also a good idea with cheap tanks/flyers

DA ravenwing also good idea

There are a whole lot IG can bring to a Marine army. What you are probably looking for is something complimentary to what you have. For example, I run White Scars biker lists. They are very much a frontal assault, so IG Artilery would compliment it nicely.

Throw up the list you normally play, and I'll give you some suggestions on what could work well.

I have dreadnoughts, Sternguards, terminators, landspeeders and for heavyset I tend to throw my predators out there. I have just about every option there is to a Space Marine Army except flyers. I kinda don't like flyers

I have defense against flyers, I can field AA whirlwind (FW)' I have ADL and a Bastion. I've had good luck blowing up birds coming in from reserve. It's awesome to have a master of the forge or SGT Tellion on the Icarus lascannon.

Umm... IG flyers are a must then.
